Would look to replace complete unit and possibly bolts / nuts too.
On that basis are we all off the opinion it's easy? What about jacking the chassis up / the axle rotating once the old one is out and therefore struggling to line up or is this MORE likely to happen if the def is up in the air on a lift?

Davew. Thanks again for your reply and sorry to contradict but i'm if the balljoint was stiff you would in deed get articulation but it would be out of phase / at the wrong angle? Yes / No.?

Also kind of going back to original post and assuming above is possibe ie operating at the wrong angle what sort of problems would be expected?

Could it for example for like a brake braking force was being applied?

Symptoms of a worn A frame ball joint is a positive clonk when taking up the drive. As has been said the easiest way to replace it is to renew the carrier it sits in too .....unless you have access to a decent press or fancy taking a gamble with mucking about with large hammers and vice.

As mentioned in one of the above threads you can get a greasable joint from Gwn Lewis, it's adustable too which will give you even more scope for clutching at straws...

thanks very much Steve for the links and in particular the added benefit of the G.L. item being adjustable Smile

it would still be useful to know if possible and what symptoms would be for the ball joint sticking and not moving....

as you may recall in the early days I had the front tyres scrubbing and the wear was happening in what is known as saw tooth .....lots of suggestions were given from various people including various tyre suppliers and it would appear it all boiled down to the o/s ball joint sticking from time to time - new track rod and rod ends problem has gone.

I'm just wondering if I have another ball joint sticking (assuming it's possible) and it's the cause of my intermittent really bad clonk on gear change, occasional clattering and occasional clonk / bang when going over hills / axle articulation?

yesterday for example manoeuvred out of a car park to the narrow exit over a very low kerb (about 30mm) and clonk / bang - thought I'd hit one of the Bl00dy bollards for a minute but suspect it was the ball joint?

Wayne save your self the grief and take it down to Gwyn Lewis in Welshpool, not that far from you. He will take the time to check your whole suspension and prop set up and will tell you exactly what's wrong, if anything and only replace what's needed. Thumbs Up

Brian,

That's a great idea - thank you.

Will however at least wait till I've had the ball joint replaced as the knocking is becoming increasingly frequent and wouldn't want to get to find the only issue is the ball joint.

Thanks again and I trust you're well?

Anything pertaining to 'joints' make me wince a little at the moment. The prospect of a few weeks off work seems enticing, nevertheless when you can't do anything it drives you nuts. Thanks for your wishes Wayne. Appreciated!

Good luck with your fettling. Crow's feet I've plenty of, in my toolbox and my fizzog round the eyes at my age! Laughing Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
