Now is winter here, but I hope that in 6 month more the device will be proved.
At least is less expensive than change the radiator for a more efficient one. Cheers Eduardo MY 2007 110 SW PUMA 2.4: Big Fog of 64' MY 1994 Jayco 1207 Folding camper: "El Tremendo" Click image to enlarge |

This simple mod has got to be ideal for all those towing.
For the last 4-5 months my 2.4Tdci has been Safe Mode whenever I towed up a hill, cruised at 70(or maybe just above in which case it was a bl..dy good way of stopping me speeding!!), or even normal driving on a hot day(not that that happened much!) It may also be the cure for those with air restrictions mounted on the front that occasionally trigger the safe mode. Anyway, Brendan/Barbara performed as they usually do and got me mine the following day. Half an hour later, all done. My Defender hasn't triggered Safe Mode since. From 10-15 times per day(on long journeys to London or Plymouth and back i.e.. 4-600miles in the day) to absolutely ZERO. Another Brilliant, Simple Mod that Landrover should have done in the first place. WELL DONE Nakatanenga and of course Brendan & Barbara |

So here is my own experience.
I fitted this spacer on my Defender 90SW 2.4 Puma MY2009 (without aircon) with 85k (km) on the clock planning a trip to Andalusia, knowing there are quite a few long stiff slopes on the motorway and the outside temperature is fairly hot over there (between 30~35 degs Celsius). My car has never experienced power loss nor reported overheat before, but I did notice some small coolant loss in the past during summer that can indicate a rise in coolant temperature - Having a Scanguage fitted, I also noticed coolant temps getting quite close to 100 degrees in some cases. So fitting this spacer was more of a preventive measure for me. Back from my trip, I can say I've seen the coolant temp reaching the 100 degrees mark on a few occasions, driving at high speed (for a Defender) and fully loaded (4 people with their stuff in a 90), and the expansion tank still shows trace of coolant escaping through the cap (cap is new, replaced 3 times already). So all in all, it may improve things but it's not "the" cure IMHO, it certainly helps yet I doubt it can be considered a complete solution to the problem of overheating. As munch90 noted earlier in this thread, it won't drop the temperature below what the thermostat allows. For a more complete solution, I reckon one would need to change the thermostat as well, as covered in another thread. Anyway, the Defender has been completely faultless during this ~2500 kms trip. |

Summer is near and as 3rd measure (change the Intercooler and change the thermostat) I bougth the spacer to try with it during summertime.
So, I will check if improves the temp. Currently temperature varies between 80-90°C in the city and between 90-100°C in the highway without load it. With load can go over 100°C. The other day the Defender entering in safe mode (at 145 kph in a long slope is predictable I guess ) Cheers! Tig, X2 I always understood a Puma has an oversized cooling system in the first place, and mine does the same as yours. I have been driving this summer in rather extreme 38C heatwave conditions for several 100km at length at continuous 120kph, and coolant temp meter stays rock solid just under the middle. The fan blows when stopping for a pause, but coping well with getting rid of any heat. Now, I do have the PEL500110 as well as the larger Entreq intercooler, but also my standard map. I suspect that a lot of Puma overheating problems come from mapping, more power means more heat production I think.
Now that we get frost the last week or so, the PEL500110 makes no difference to time/km needed for engine warming up. So thermostat may open at lower temp than standard, but warm up is the same, only engine will run more in the 80's than in 90's or higher. Eric You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw Last edited by ericvv on 25th Nov 2015 5:55pm. mines running a BAS map for the last 30,000 miles.
towed a 20ft trailer with an e class merc and a new 110 chassis for 200 miles this summer and never moved? I did have the a/c on which helps the cooling. |

As I understand it, the spacer only benefits at low speeds, when the air mass flow rate is governed by the fan "pulling" air through the radiator. At higher speeds, the fan is "redundant" as airflow is governed by the vehicles forward motion "pushing" air through the radiator.
In any case; with the spacer fitted, my impression in warm (+30degC) conditions, under moderate load in slow moving traffic, it is having a positive effect. Although its impossible to recreate exact conditions before and after fitting, the scangauge readings seem to show temps running 5-8degC cooler. I can't see any downside to the spacer, so from my perspective its a no-brainer for those in warmer climates. |

My impression after install the spacer:
I running the Defender with and without the spacer under the same conditions (temperatures of 30 to 37°C in the same highway) with the air conditioning on. Without the spacer, temps goes in the range of 95-96°C in most of the trip and reach 116°C (LIMP mode) in one opportunity in a gentle slope. After 3 trips with the spacer installed seems the temperature was decreased to 90-96°C and in the slope reach 105°C. Appears that the spacer have an effect of 5-10° less, enough to avoid the limp mode in the normal driving, at least in my case. Cheers! First, the spacer move the fan where it should stay. The original position is outside the duct and in this way the fan loose tons of efficiency.
Second, the 2.2 engine has new visco coupler with with a longer connecting sleeve/shaft (yes LR copied the idea) Discovery 5 td6 HSE Stornoway Gray Outback Engineering Limited Edition IID Pro MV License |
