Oil leaking
Goodmorning to everybody!

Just today I decided to share with you an issue with my new Def (10.000km) MY2010. since I first got it from the dealer. As you can see in the following attached photos there is a small oil leaking in the area close to the front bottom part of the engine. The leaking is small since after a week parked in the same spot without moving it I can see only a small "pool" of oil with a diameter of 3cm.

I guess that when the engine is working and the oil gets hotter and thiner the leaking must be worse that's why I see all the wet areas from oil around. While checking the oil dipstick there is no significant decrease in the oil level.

When I got it to the dealer two weeks ago they told me they would tighten the screws around a bit and then check again. Its been around 800km after this tightening and the leaking is still there. Could you please offer any ideas about the nature of the problem even if it is of minor importance since I am still under warranty and I want this issue to be solved.

On the otherhand a great car, being already a member of the family and enjoying it even if I have to put 1lt of oil per week to keep it going Smile

Thank you very much!!

I personaly would book it into the dealers and get them to replace the leaking gasket under warranty. It is costing you money every week by you putting in a liter of oil plus the mess. The fact that the dealer nipped up the bolts and it is still leaking means the gasket has failed and will need replaced.

LRMike,

Take to the dealers to replace the gasket under warranty, and also request at least a free oil change due all the oil lost during those weeks.

Cheers Eduardo

Thank you all for your replies my friends.

I will go to the dealer to change the gasket under warranty which, if it is something complicated to do I am afraid the dealer will fix this but might damage other things in the process.

I don't really trust them to put their hands there. Is this gasket difficult to be removed and what does it seal?

Thank you!

Mike.

It looks like the timing cover gasket will need to be replaced. Which means removing the accessory drive belt idler assembly and the crankshaft pulley and a few other things just to get access to the cover. Would think they would remove engine to do this unless they strip down the front of the landy, intercooler and radiator removed. Not 100% sure but some one more in the know will come along and tell you. Hope I am wrong......

After a small search I did inside the workshop manual I came across this interesting photo in which there is a clear depiction of how is the sealant around the front cover.

Inside the manual it is stated :
The pressed steel front cover is bolted to the front of the cylinder block, the cylinder head and the ladder frame with 20 bolts and sealed with a bead of Room Temperature Vulcanizing (RTV) silicon sealant.

So I am wondering if this silicon sealant failed and waiting from some experts around here to give me your opinion.

Another possible cause of my oil leaking might be the crankshaft front oil seal:

Well what do you think? In each case you think its a major job to fix either of the above? Would you consider leaving the oil leak as it is since it is barely noticable while having in mind that my Def is marking its area ? Razz

I would book it into the dealers tomorrow morning first thing and get it fixed under warranty, especially now you can see the extent of the problem. Just the cost of topping up the oil by 1ltr per week over the term you keep the landrover will set you back a few bob and sods law the thing will fail completely once you are out of warranty costing you a small fortune in labour charges in getting the dealer to fix it. But that is what I would do, after all you paid for the privilage of owning one, let Landrover have the privilage of looking after it for the first 3 years of its life!!!! Very Happy

Dear Brian,

Thank you for your concern and I will defenately visit the dealer to fix it. Maybe there was a misunderstanding about the magnitude of the oil leak. There is only a minor leaking right now. Not more than 10ml per month. It is barely noticeable. The misunderstanding came from the fact that I said I will still be in love with my def even if I have to add 1 litre of oil per week Smile

I am afraid that they will not do the repair job in a proper manner thats why I am hesitant to go there for such a small oil leaking. But I am also afraid of getting worse after the end of the warranty period so the most wise decision is to fix it right here and right now!!

Anyway thank you for everything my friend!
