This was news to me, just took some bits to my local council tip, there was a council worker there clocking the cars going in. He stopped me and said i needed a 'van permit'. I have been to this tip loads of times before in my old TD5 90 with no problems, I could see a 110 Station wagon already in there. I now drive a 110 Utility wagon, this guy showed me a list of pictures of vehicles now requiring a permit, and there was the same picture Landrover first put out of the Utility wagon, it was the same picture I first saw of a utility wagon so it was a fare cop. I don't now if this is just a Oxfordshire thing, but it is a new rule starting on 1st November, the permit is free at least for now, but I wonder for how long? http://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/wps/portal/p...an+Permits

It most certainly is NOT just an Oxfordshire trait! I have an XS with tinted windows and was asked whether I had seats in the back at my municiple tip! If not I would have had to use the van entrance and be weighed in and out on their weighbridge! In Dorset's case you are only allowed one visit per day in that instance! They have been operating them rules for some considerable time! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!
Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

As someone who used to work for a Council in Waste Management, I can confirm this is very common.
Unfortunately there is no legislation per se, so every council makes it's own rules. Basically it is to prevent commercial waste being tipped for free at "Household Waste and Recycling Centres" to give them their proper name. My last Council (in Essex) used to use height barriers at 5' 10" to keep vans out, a real pain in a Defender! Funnily enough my local tip (in Hertfordshire) has a permit system for vans (and trailers) but I've never had any trouble in my Hard Top. I suspect the metallic paint and alloys makes it obvious it's not a "commercial" vehicle. Or maybe they don't have "show and tell" books like Oxfordshire MAD COW 2007 90 Hard Top - 2009 BMW F800GS - 2002 CCM 604E Dual Sport Project90 |

Very common - more and more, but it is to stop commercial and usually you can get round it legitimately as its only to stop commercial use, not household use. Also because of the £ cost
The issue usually is height restrictions - ive never tried the defender though Mike |

Our local tip has a barrier.
If I want to drive in I ask the attendant and he opens it. Have you tried? |

My old tip fitted a height barrier once. at that time i was driving a 110 CSW with a roofrack on, so there was no chance that it would fit underneath.
"they" (the operatives) instructed me that they opened the barrier every tuesday and thursday morning, but that wasn't good enough for me... i pay my rates every friggin day! so i just parked and blocked the entrance until they did open it |

Ours has a height barrier that the Landy won't fit under, but they open it on Sundays so I just go then.
I presume the thinking is that there are no commercials working on Sundays - not exactly true, but I guess the numbers are low enough not to bother with... |

Many moons ago (long before these tiresome modern restrictions - it would have been late 1970's) I took a load of concrete rubble to the local tip in my Series One 86" sotftop. I sailed in under the barrier with several inches to spare, unloaded the concrete, then found I couldn't get out again! It was a Sunday, the tip was unmanned, and the entrance/exit for lorries and vans was in a different place, not accessible from the car entrance area.
In the end I had to take off the tilt and remove the hoodsticks to get out. At least in this case the vehicle was (and actually still is) a softop. |

I think I keep the recycling quotas up at our local tip so they're ok with me coming in - even with the Sankey.
That said, I was just helping my father-in-law today at a different center and the Sankey was more than 4' long so required a permit. By that time, however, I'd already unloaded so it was a little bit pointless. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |
