There was only a small batch of the very early ones that were prone to the bolt falling out, though AIUI, the later engines are not immune from the issue...

No guarantee that the later engines are sorted, a couple of hours and £20 worth of parts to make sure, less than some spend on polish

I'm struggling to do the same. On a car more than 12 years old, wouldn't the bolt have come undone already...are there still reports of this bolt failing today.

My 99 (MY2000) Td5 had done about 190.000 km when I got it about 1 yr ago. Because I was unsure of its past, I had it serviced and inspected by a local LR specialist, and I insisted the bolt be replaced.
It turned out the bolt was on its way out, as the mechanic reported he needed no tools to undo the bolt, he could undo it simply with his bare hands. So, it was only a matter of time, even after 14 years and 190.000 km. Ok, so mine is a MY2000, but still, for peace of mind I would have it done on any Td5 I'd ever own (I don't know if the Tdi's suffer from the same problem, I know the Puma's don't). All I can say is I am happy I had it done. My specialist also thought "after so many years/kms, it's probably fine or it would have happened already", but he rang up a fellow mechanic that specializes in Td5's and he confirmed it's best to do it anyway. As it turned out, it was replaced for good reason.
Have yours done, the expense is minor but the peace of mind is huge! Defender 130 HCPU Td5 MY2000 |

I'll be wise to check it next oil change... my only concern is that i'm going to be an amateur and get oil in the threads or on the bolt while I try to get it in, making the problem worse than it perhaps was.
