We were out in the Dales on Friday and tried to drive from Scar House to Middlesmoor but I bottled it without anyone else there for support. Martin, yes you were going the right way but you should have taken the fork to the right rather than shunt through the gate.
The other side of the reservoir has a voluntary LARA TRO in one direction i.e going up and is a bit more technical on the decent, with a distinct chance of damage ignoring the TRO to the environment and vehicle. I would not advocate doing any lane alone, as I have seen something as simple of someone losing their car keys while stopped for photos

We were going to go to Middlesmoor to do it that way but knew I'd find it easier at the reservoir.
