egr valve self clean , mine is an 11 and has done it from new, I sort of find it reassuring that everything is fine. getting more noisy may be an issue with debris build up, lots of threads on here about it. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,
I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy |

Does it matter that it has suddenly got a lot louder doing it?

get your head under the bonnet whilst someone else switches it off and try and isolate exactly where the sound is coming from.
Better still video it and pop it up on here for a better diagnosis. |

Have video - will upload in the morning when internet faster. Having listened again, it is doing it occasionally as engine revs up or down....it sounds a bit like a belt slipping perhaps? Hopefully video will enable someone to diagnose it.

I have known the EGR to make noises durning running occasionally.
Usually when they are about to cause you problems. I'm glad I'm rid of the damned thing personally but most of us can probably tell if that is it or not if you upload a video like you said, |

So got there eventually with the video...hopefully this works:
http://vid791.photobucket.com/albums/yy200/mrol/IMG_3002_1.mp4 sound is at 4s, then at 20-24s and then finally at 33s when engine is being turned off. It doesn't do the creak/squeak quite so much at turn off this time (i.e. each 'pulse' of the EGR cleaning it doesn't creak on the video, but sometimes it does do it with each pulse). |

Yup egr valve, all my 2.4's made the chukka chukka sounds at shutdown from new, yours sounds noisier in operation though. Plenty of threads on here about it, the search function should reveal them. Steve.

So should I get it checked/cleaned/replaced or is it ok to run with it?

Try some Millers Diesel additive for now, see if it improves.

Would the brand of fuel have any bearing here?

It can add to it yes, generally most of us use BP, Shell or Esso.
Not any supermarket brands. |
