A definitive guide to the 3.2tdci coversion
I've been a long time lurker on here, I've decided to brake cover finally, so hello all Thumbs Up

I have been looking at the 3.2tdci engine for my 2008 2.4 but I can't really find detailed info on this conversion. Build threads seem very thin on the ground, which surprises me as it's clearly a good option.

The plan is, is to source and fit it all myself, but using a plug and play loom (if available) to conquer the electrical hurdles, but mainly because I don't do electrics Laughing

Fabrication for mounts ect isn't an issue as I could do this at work.

Any info, suggestions and help would be greatfully received!

The sad fact of the matter is there isn't a guide. Not as far as I'm aware..

Your in the same boat as me. I'd love a guide on how to fit the supercharged AJV8 4.2 to my 110. I know people have done it but is there a guide? Nope.

The main problem is the fact that most of the people who have done it are businesses (In both our cases JE Engineering) and they couldn't give a monkeys about LR enthusiasts who want to do it themselves because all they are interested in is your money.. That's ok if you have £50k to throw at your LR but alas most of us don't.

I think there are a couple of folk on here who have fitted the 3.2 so be interested to hear what they have to say to you.....

Theres plenty of people willing to share cummins conversions a huge engine in a defender fairly simple.

its just the electrics that go with a 3.2 / newer v8 which is the problem


rakeway will drop a ls3 for about 22k inc vat (just for engine gearbox intercooler and radiator) they also really know what there doing, twisted's gumball car was finished by them.

it's silly to put that much power in without uprating things, which is where it yet again starts to add up, uprated drivetrain and diffs, bigger brakes, uprated dampers and shocks...

It's been done and the first person to physically have one running standalone was Pete from Bas
Je Just have a Censored singer solution that won't run right just like all the singer stuff

To this conversion yourself you need to have about 5-10k depending if you have a engine the ranger 3.2 engine is different to the transit version so arm this is a no go

Pete has someone message him roughly every 2 week regarding this conversion !
I have one and for the right money you can buy the whole car for 35k

Any questions please ask

True. But no matter what you do to it, it will always sound like a bloody transit. Unlike the 5 cylinder.

Of course a petrol V8 is a million times better than both Thumbs Up Whistle

Fitting a 3.2 tdci is something I always have in the back of my mind. The costs seem prohibitive at the moment and my 2.2 is low milleage so far. I would have thought the costs should come down over the next couple of years. How much do you reckon a new 3.2 engine is ? I guess about 6 or 7 grand, installation no more than £1000 labour cost. The problem is only a few companies know how to do it at the moment, they need to recoup their development costs and there is no competition. In 5 years time it will common place.

You need at least.

Engine,
gearbox,
gearbox conversion to 4wd,
intercooler with 60mm pipes,
intercooler hoses to suite,
water pipe work,
wiring and fuse boxes,
throttle pedal,
engine and body ecu key and programming etc,
special module to keep it happy out of its normal enviroment (transit),
labour for fitting all which is a lot more than 20 hrs.
AC modification to allow it to fit with the large transit 3.2 turbo,
exhaust front pipe construction and a few other parts I forget about at this moment.

I have just looked at JE engineering website. £21 to 25 grand depending on transmission! I think I will just buy a ranger 3.2 instead. In 5 years time you will be able to go to a wreckers and get all the bits for a couple of grand, your local indie will have figured out how to get them running, bobs your uncle. Till then I will make do with the 2.2, its actually pretty nice now it's been remapped anyway.

I've a 2.4 and to be honest I'm a little underwhelmed by it compared to the td5 it replaced.

I'm very surprised there isn't more info out there. I can understand specialists want to carry out the conversion themselves, but for those capable of doing it in their own garages, they will never get their business!

I'm fairly competent in this sort of field, having been a welder fabricator for a number of years and now working in formula 1. The Fabrication of parts such as the exhaust ect is easy as are replacing water pipes and installing a new intercooler. Ac I don't have.

The only issue is the wiring, if there's a plug and play solution to this, then I can't see that the over all conversion is a difficult one at all. The main expense being in the gearbox I guess.

By the time I've sold the gearbox and engine from mine I'd expect to have to pay out a couple of grand extra for the 3.2 and then loom and accociated bits £5k tops?

So how it can become £21k or even £10k seems ludicrous.

its £21k because they've spent the time trying and testing various combinations, laid out the money to buy a handful of components until something works, and ultimately because of this research they know how to do it and you do'nt.... Stand alone engine management systems aren't cheap. I think when I looked at the option of squeezing a TDV8 into mine, the management system was about £7k (three years ago) and had never been done before.

As for the fabrication side of things, if you didn't work in F1, you'd have to pay a fabricator to make these parts for you.

Conservative estimates...

Engine £3k
Transmission £2k
Engine management system £3.5k
Custom parts and labour £who knows!
Profit £lots!

It soon adds up!
