whats this bare wire for?
While tracing a really dodgy wiring job on my satelite tracking unit I noticed what looks like an original wire taped to the bulkhead with a bare end.
It comes from the green "controller" below the instrument cluster.
Any ideas what it could be doing?

I asked my dealer the same question, they replied that it was a spare wire for an optionable part......

Well the green box is im 99% sure the Alarm ECU.

The wire could be the aerial but could be for something else. Ive never known Land Rover to leave a wire like that. Mike

As MSE said, the green box is the ECU alarm.
Have 2 connectors and as far as I see the wire comming from the gray one.

If it is:

Can you give me an idea were this cable is located according to the following diagram and table?

CAV TERMINAL CSA COL CCT DESTN
1 AFU3752 0.5D PW 22L C0488
3 YPL10036 0.5D WB 22L C0488

25 AFU3753 1.5D PN 768L C0574
26 AFU3752 0.5D OS 22L C1582

I can trace it in the Electric Library Reference if you need

As you see several positions are not used. I suspect that one of them correspond to the wire that you have attached there.

Looks like either position 1 or 14.
My photo shows the spare wire as the first orange wire on the far left of the grey plug.
What I found strange is that the wire was skinned and is therefore at risk of earthing unless it is an input wire.

My remote is also pretty pathetic. I found a trick holding the remote to the back of my head, open mouth wide and press - aparently doing this spreads the signal - definately works - no funny comments please Embarassed Puma 110 - gone

God, anything to improve the keyfob range would be a bonus. All the remote equipped Defender's I've owned this one has to be the worse, one day it will work at the rear of the vehicle, another it won't. I've moaned and had it looked at by two dealers who whilst agreeing it is dire say it's within acceptable limits Rolling Eyes

All remotes ranges suffer from atmospheric conditions just as radio signals do.

Ive had mine working close enough to use a key and far enough you can only just see the car. So i wouldnt worry.

It's the "OS" (orange and slate) wire from position 26 (the drawing is from the front of the connector, the photo from the rear).

I don't have the Puma electrical library to hand, but my Td5 one says it is the Aerial, and the box looks identical to the Td5 one Smile

I'm not worried, I've owned and used enough Land Rovers over the past three decades to know that they all have their quirks ...but the keyfob on this one is particularly poor on range.

Ok,

From the electrical library:

Pos 01 goes to C0488 wich is the Main harness to interior lamp harness
Pos14 goes to C1040L wich is the Instrument cluster
Pos 26 goes to C1582 the Aerial. That should be the cable.

If it is position 26 the specs for this is the following:

CAV TERMINAL CSA COL CCT DESTN
1 CUT_BARE_END 0.5D OS 22L C0061L

So, its OK as it is.

Regarding the remote control: thats true, the behavior is quite variable. But in general you must be at less than 1 mt of the car to open/close it.

Cheers Eduardo

put my 07 in the garage last week as the remote had to be above the bonnet to work. they agreed this was wrong. They ordered a new ECU but on removing it, found the antenna was scrunched up or disconnected (yes I know!) the head technician then was happy to demonstrate the remote working from one end of the workshop to the other. Mine now easily works six feet away from the vehicle in any directon (front/back)
