Played with a lot of electrics on the Landy but not done that. Not needed to really.
Is this something you need? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1989 Defender 90 Toyota Aygo & Honda FR-V |

1) Why do you think you need to do this?
2) If the fuse blew with the engine running the alternator will probably self destruct. It introduces another component and potential failure where one really isn't needed. |

I think there's one there already, part of the battery connector assembly?

Hi folks.
Definitely not fused at the moment. And have been considerding doing this, main reason is that the 90 is for off roading only and i have concerns about damage occuring to the cableduring off roading. The car is isolated but I have seen these isolators fail. Also with the car being a very early 90 there is no fusing to the likes of the ignition and glow plugs. This is something else I intend to sort out but was looking for opinions on fusing the main cable to. So all thoughts welcomed. thanks for the replys. Rod |

Protect the cable. Fit a good manual isolator switch adjacent to the battery (with the appropriate circuitry to protect the alternator) in the same way as you would on a competition vehicle.

There's definitely one on my Puma & its listed on Microcat, so I assume you're running an earlier truck, for off road I'd agree with the above, battery isolator through the front of the seat box is the way forward.

There is indeed a megafuse on the Puma but in reality it is not going to do much good - it will probably blow if there is a dead short to ground after a serious accident, but the current needed to blow it is well in excess of the current needed to incinerate the vehicle. I think it is only there due to an EU requirement. Don't rely on it actually doing anything useful under normal fault conditions.

Hi Blackwolf.
Thus is the circumstances that I was looking to protect from. As you say highly unlikely and the isolator should be suitable. I just like to err on the side of caution. Cheers again. Rod |
