Jeeves,
What was the rough costs of the ferries & camping/accomodation ?

Wouldn't mind taking my 2 lads on that sort of trip.

Hopscotch ticket from Calmac was £271....hopscotch 23 I think....camping varied depending on whether you want electric hook up....budget on £20-25 pound per night with electric or around £12-£15 without electric.
Then fuel on top of course. I filled a full tank at Oban Tesco and a top up on Lewis at Stornoway.
Skye has fuel at Broadford and Portree- fuel costs are slightly higher on the Islands but if you plan your trip you don't necessarily have to fill up on the Islands.

Hey Jeeves, how do you get on with the front panel on your Oztent in high winds? Ours seems to flap about like crazy, although the side panels are fine. Any tips for battening it down?!

Cheers

We usually ensured that the rear of the tent was into the wind I.e. Not the front panel and then stacked camping chairs fridge etc against the front panel...we then used the defender as a wind break...extreme conditions and it pretty much withstood all the Hebridean weather threw at it !
Only one issue with the front panel....look closely at some of the pics and you will see a tyre sized imprint caused by using auto glym spray on the spare tyre and putting front panel of tent against it ! Laughing

One of the best journeys . Glad you enjoyed . If that's not an incentive to get camping then I don't know what is . This is the campsite I met my wife in . There were only 2 tents that day , hers and mine .

Looks great

I've not done much in this area, but have cycled round some of Harris (IIRC bikes are free on the Uig-Harris ferry, you only pay as a foot passenger). Also the highest point of the islands (Clisham) is a lovely hillwalk, and terrific views from the top Thumbs Up

Keen to go back, but it's always difficult juggling ferry & accommodation options (unless you're camping).

Nice write-up, thanks for sharing Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

Nice write up @jeeves very inspirational! We recently bought an Oztent RV-5 and have used it on 4 weekend camping trips. Must say its not quick pitching and dismantling the tent when you take into account the extra panels and all your stuff - let alone you doing it in the wind and rain! I'm impressed you managed so many stops! Got a couple of questions for you:

- Do you recommend the groundsheet?
- Did you use any tent heater to keep warm? I saw you had an electric hook up in Lewis?
- What's the awning you used? I see it formed another tent?
- It looks like you have 5 seats and use the rear for racking/storage (or perhaps the dog?) Any tips?
- Looking back is there anything you would or wouldn't have taken?

We're still getting into the groove of how to camp with two kids & Oztent efficiently, any advice is welcome! Pic of our first trip to Peak District below

Thats a lovely Landy acuss01!

I'm in the market for a new tent as ours did not last a Tiree storm. At the moment I'm keen on an Oztent as I think a roof top tent would be a pain when we want to use the landy for going to the shops, etc while camping. I'm keen to know about awnings too, as I like the idea of the Hannibal one with no poles. Are the poles on the Oztent awnings a pain in the...?

I'll be making a trip down to the Peterburgh show next month, so hope to buy something there.

All advice welcomed.
cheers Richard

Thanks @rleslie

A roof tent wouldn't suit us either as we a) have kids who would just take it over! and b) I think it would be too exposed in windy conditions.

The Oztent is good but heavy. We've got the biggest one. I'd consider smaller if you don't need that. But defo get peaked side panels.

Regards the awning you don't have to use poles if you just attach the front of the awning to your truck and leave off the side panels.

We'll be camping at LRO Show, so feel free to have a look! 2015 110 XS CSW Montalcino Red with Black Pack
