Sorry Chaps. Eventful day and late night in the end....

The car was pretty much as described. Pretty much original as far as I could tell with lots of "charm". Simon's a lovely chap and we did a deal yesterday lunchtime. Went back late yesterday afternoon to pick it up and decided to drive it home the 40 miles.

She drives well and we made good progress until we stopped to change driver - my wife was itching for a go. On going to pull away, she wouldn't move and we found the rear wheels red hot so assume the brakes were binding/similar. Called recovery as figured if I went to get my trailer would struggle to get her on. By the time the recovery arrived, things had freed off and we drove the rest of the way home (followed by the recovery wagon). So guess that's the first job then to see what's going on in there

She's tucked up in the garage now and we're working out what to do. We will convert her to a soft top with benches in the back as we've three lads and a dog. There are some immediate jobs that need doing: wipers, one brake light out, LH indicators not working and maybe put new tyres on as these are looking their age. Other than that the plan is to keep her looking her age (and hopefully arrest the currently rusty bits).

Lovely - glad it worked out and the only problem on a 40 mile drive was the brakes.

I've had the same problem - when I took the rear brakes apart to service them and managed to fit the leading and trailing shoes the wrong way round - it drives for a while, warms up and then locks on Embarassed

All good then, glad your pleased with her!

I will buy your old Avon Traction tyres if they are not too bad, if your thinking of getting rid of them Whistle

They are prone to perish and crack around the wall,
New ones are about £230 a piece!

I'm after a part worn set for one of my 80s 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

Ian

There's not an Avon in the house. There's 3 Marquis and 1 Monarcho and they're only good for tree swings really....

Well after the excitement of the ride home went for a ride just round the village yesterday, only for it to cut out completely. After a white knuckle tow home from the good lady, had a dig under the hood today and not getting spark at the plugs. Replaced the points, plug and condenser (that's what my local factors had) but to no avail. Will dig deeper tomorrow.

Love what milesr3 is doing on his thread. Will probably enjoy the summer with it and think of doing something similar over the winter

Make sure it's not got one of the crappy riveted rotor arms fitted!

Genuine Lucas ones didn't have the rivet on the arm.

I've had a brand new one, that would stop the Sparks dead after a 10 min run.

hope you get it sorted, and up and running again.

So Gertie's had a relatively quiet few months what with ailing relatives and new business ventures.

Work so far:
    New Avon tyres all round
    Cab off and hood on
New fuel tank after she ruined my painted garage floor with her incontinence
Two towing eyes - been used a few of times!!! Seems bathroom silicone is not the stuff to seal your fuel sender unit to the fuel tank as it degrades, drops into the tank and blocks the fuel pipe.... If I find you...
Seats in the back - cracking deal for a tenner off a nice chap on the Series2Club

Not really been far over the winter in her but got her out this weekend and had a lovely time in the winter sun. Brought a real smile to my face driving her.

There's a good list of small jobs to do. Definitely not going to paint her as love the "patina". Thinking of maybe giving her a galvanised chassis down the line but rebuilding and retaining the 50 year old "charm" on top. Inspired by milesr3's thread here: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic31372.html
