Looking at a series 2
Folks

Looking at this tomorrow. Seems up together and about the right level of "project" for me to cut my teeth on with with my three growing lads.

Apart from the "1600 miles in 20 years" anything else stick out as needing a good look at

A good 2 1/4" petrol should tick over almost inaudibly when its warm - sounds a bit like a sewing machine - any rattles are a bad sign.

If it's got the original gearbox, no synchromesh on first or second - how's your double-declutching technique?

Otherwise it's all the usual Series stuff - oil leaks from everywhere? quite a few of the seals were cork/natural rubber, and not being driven allows stuff to dry out.
Give it a good test drive, even with the drum brakes it should pull up square. There was always some gearbox whine, but if it drowns out all the other noises you will be looking at a re-con gearbox. Check for the classic jumping out of gear when using engine braking or on the overrun - signs of worn syncro/broken detent springs/ loose mainshaft nut

With so few miles in the last 20 years you might find the 4wd selectors are sticking...
Driving along a straight quiet road, shove down the yellow 4wd lever. It should stay down and you are now in high ratio 4wd.
Stop and pull the red low ratio lever back and forwards again, the yellow lever should spring back up to disengage it.
It's not the end of the world if it doesn't work, will just need freeing off, but might be a useful bargaining point?

A small magnet might be useful to check if the bulkhead tops are still made of metal, or artistic body filler!

It seems pricey to me, but values are rising, and that is a nice classic registration number.

I love that! Seems very original which is a valuable asset. Personally I would not want to over restore it, I would retain as much of its charm as possible, and just make a solid reliable vehicle out of it.

Its got the original large top radiator, which is hard to find these days. Under bonnet looks very original.

It does look nice, but I notice all new screws around the instrument panel, I wonder why someone went in there? Of course that is where the speedo is mounted but they wouldn't want to have done anything with that would they? Just a thought. Still looks good anyway Smile 2.2 90 XS

This vehicle was snapped up recently by a series 2 club member at a good price and then offered it for sale on the forum. It is a good example as far as I know.

Looks lovely and original - bin the Ifor top and put a sand canvas hood on and sticks. Roller paint in original Bronze Green, will look so tidy.

I know the chap selling it, Simon Lake.
He's our Series 1 club, local rep.

I can say that he only chooses to sell the nicer series vehicles, so you should be looking at a goodun Wink


Nice plate on that one too, knowing him he would have done a bit of research on when and where it was registered.

It wont and that would be yet another series ruined! Poor paint jobs never make anything look good. Either a bare respray by a pro or in the case of this car leave it original as thats what your paying for rather than a previously messed up old dog
