Defender Puma 2.2 over fuelling

This is my dismal experiences with the Land Rover puma brand. I am the point of just giving up!!! Let’s hear from the bloggers
How can I express my dismal experiences of owning Defenders? The chapter in my life of owing and driving my stupid boyish dream vehicle is finally over and I have to accept that these vehicles are mechanical nightmares. My dream was to see places, be a little more adventurous, however I have to except it is not to be.
The vehicles under discussion is my 1st landy, a well kitted and hardly used 90 luckily and I mean luckily now sold at a loss and the current 110 on its way to the second hand dealers once I receive it back from LR.
The following is an explanation of the engine failure that I experienced with the 2011 defender 90 puma 2.4 at 58000 km during December 2013. The failure was so bad and unexpected that I decided to replace the vehicle as I deemed the vehicle unsafe for any future scenic family trips.
My understanding of the motor failure experienced with the vehicles after talking with a LR mack was that an additional engine flush offered to me when the vehicle was booked for the 60000 Km service was apparently not preformed correctly. Apparently fragments of dirt stayed behind in the motor causing the breather pipe to block. This then led to extreme motor pressure build-up, causing the total collapse of the crankshaft seals on the pulley side of the motor, seals on the power steering pump, water pump etc. The vehicle was then road transported to Gauteng where after the vehicle was returned to me after about 2 ½ months, to put everything in perspective, and my subsequent decision to sell the vehicle, Land Rover could never explain to me why the vehicle failed so drastically.
To further add to my frustrations in the short life of this mentioned vehicle, the driver’s seat collapsed, both front drive hubs leaked and one side leaked so vigorously after a service repair that the brakes failed and I was almost involved in an accident, the handbrake tensioned up by itself, the vehicle pulled constantly to the left, paint peeled off and had to be repaired, roof joint cracks, turbo hose failed etc. etc.
Now let’s talk about my experience with the current so called new 2014 Defender 110 defender puma 2.2 that I had reluctantly purchased after the previous vehicle failures to get myself and my family home safely!! It must be added that Land Rover could not supply me with a rental that was able to pull a caravan from Cape Town back home after the issues with the 90. My decision at the time was based on the misbelieved facts and sales

that the new vehicle with an upgraded motor will be much better than the older model. However that statement is now proven to be utter nonsense.
The agency where the vehicle were purchased were unable to assist, even 6 months after purchasing the vehicle to replace defects that was pointed out to them when the vehicle was collected. I sent nemours e-mails to the dealership unsuccessfully, reverted to LR SA to assist and finally decided to just simply give up. I eventually took the vehicle to have the window glassing repaired at my own expense.
After taking the vehicle for a preventative service at 8950 km before a planned trip my experience can be described as dismally disappointing. The vehicle was returned to the dealership after a single trip home with a blown intercooler turbo hose.
Don’t worry that was only a small appetizer of things to follow. At 16000 Km, no sorry 17000 Km the vehicle had to recovered with the 2nd attempt at repairing a blown intercooler. The vehicle was returned to me with a temperature issue that was eventually sorted out by replacing the thermostat (The 3rd agencies that I took the vehicle too could only diagnose the problem). At the time I cancelled planned trips and leave as I had no confidence in the performance of the vehicle and I am actually now very glad I did.
How utterly silly of me! I decided to keep the vehicle hoping that the problems were solved. At36000 Km the motor seized 26 Km from a LR service centre. Apparently the unconfirmed speculative cause of failure was due to over fuelling and not due to a loss of oil due to an oil filler cap seal failure as originally speculated.
According to my understanding over fuelling is that it is a term used for any condition during which too much fuel is injected for the amount of air available and normally results in black smoke and abnormally high EGT's. And now, where is the vehicle at the moment? Guess, back at LR after driving for 2800Km apparently with a blown intercooler pipe or faulty air flow sensor? What a mechanical nightmare!!.

What is the verdict? Stay or Go

Get rid, there are so many great 4x4 for sale in South Africa that are not available in the UK, get yourself a land cruiser series 70.

Could well have been caused by the oil pump fault. Check your chassis number isn't in the dodgy batch.

LD did replace the motor however the vehicle is still problematic.
It was pointed out to me that the motor failed due to over fuelling and not due to a loss of oil as originally speculated.
According to my understanding over fuelling is used to explain a condition during which too much fuel is injected for the amount of air available and normally results in black smoke and abnormally high EGT's.
The only type of "overfuelling" which can result in engine seizure without due up-front warning ( which was the case ) is when an injector or injectors fail catastrophically. This will then lead to cylinder washing as well as crown flaming which will cause piston skirt seizure.

The biggest cause of such sudden injector failure is apparently due to the presence of water or sticky injector nozzles - this causes the complete injector tip to fail resulting in a constant stream of diesel being pumped into the engine.

As the injectors were not replaced during the rebuild I am somewhat concerned that the same fault can reoccur.

LR diagnostics to my mind leaves a lot to be desired.

8loodi useless. the drivel I was fed when my drivers door lock was on it's was out was nothing short of unbelievable.

I could only stand there speechless with a dropped lower jaw.

guess what a few weeks later it packed up completely .....oh back to the same problem again.

the defender is a brilliant concept in so many ways but so poorly executed / follow up service beggars belief.

I've said it several times before - the defender should be turned into a kit car where by individuals can assemble them with the care they deserve and with a choice of engines, interiors, wheels etc rather than having to do all this after market and rebuild them to resolve the poor assembly process.
