Ahh ok yes makes sense. Will give them a poke through!

Would this cause it to loose water though? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

shaggy, when my head had cracked it was slowly losing coolant. had to top it up few times a week. couldn't see a leak, no white smoke.

or so i thought!! as soon as the cold weather came i could see the steam billowing out the back! but hardly noticed it when warm out! My 109 thread

Shocked

I'm really hoping it isn't a cracked head as you cannot find them, even turner engineering don't have them. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

don't think the 200 were as susceptible to heads cracking as the 300. might be your gasket though! My 109 thread

They arent but I'm trying to cover all bases.

Plus a good 200Tdi head would be a very useful spare to have!

not lose water , but temp up and down , unless temp up enough to lose a bit out of cap as steam

has level dropped more than once ?

heads arent bad to do , no belt or timing chain etc

ive never seen a 200 or 300 with a cracked head , al l the ones ive done have been gaskets gone

Water level does drop very slowly over about 3 months. I had just topped it up along with the oil and put it down to general old engine consumption of fluids. However recently it has stated dropping much faster.

Reading up on it, looks achievable but would prefer to have a learned sage with me who can help and advise.

Cutting rust out is easy, engines are much much more delicate and difficult to replace Shocked Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

actually its fairly easy, just time consuming. think it took a good afternoon to get the head off and block cleaned up. And maybe a bit longer to put it all back together. nothing was difficult to remove, all straight forward.
for me the faffy part is the re torquing sequence. My 109 thread

*** Update!***
Hi Guys,

Just a quick update to say it has been in for its service and the technicians looking at it have found no Leaks on a block test, no coolant contamination from a sniffer test which indicates that the head is fine.

So, My boss's Dad has an old V8 Disco which has recently failed its mot so he has kindly lent me its coolant cap so I can try running with that for a while to see how it reacts.

Otherwise, drawing blanks all round I think! Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Another update Rolling Eyes

Complete coolant change on Thursday as part of her heavy service, got the garage to to a Sniffer test and block test which showed up nothing wrong.

My boss's dad has let me borrow a new cap which has been on since Saturday and yet still the temperature has been getting hot and it has lost coolant Big Cry

I have no idea what to do now Sad Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

One of my co-workers has suggested maybe one of the coolant galleries is blocked and causing a localised hot spot which is causing the coolant loss and overheating?

Can anyone recommend a way of checking my galleries are clear?

Or a good Tdi safe Coolant flushing/cleaning system?

Any advice welcome Embarassed Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Shaggy, I know it's not what you want to hear, but when I done sniffer test on mine it showed all clear.
These seem to only work if a gasket is blowing from cylinders.

It was only until I took the head off it had gone between the water ways.
I think to get to the bottom of this, I would be looking at taking the head off.

Sorry! Big Cry 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

I'm trying to avoid doing that as its my only vehicle and I cant have it off the road for too long. Or really afford for it to go into a garage for it ether Big Cry

It is all pointing towards having a head strip down though Sad

I just want to get rid of all other possibilities first Whistle Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I used the Holts two part flusher on our Tdi and Td5 Disco, worked really well.
