Anybody got any experiance with American pickups?
I quite fancy one.

Completely impractical, very big, thirsty, expensive to run. Much like a defender so I figured why not?

Absolutely not interested in any way at all a petrol version, I'm thinking something like a Dodge Cummins or Chevrolet Duramax?

Anyone on here got one?

What are they like to own?

Where did you get it? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

These are quite nice:

They are only 6.7L so shouldn't cost much. Rolling with laughter

Plenty of them in Aus.
Depends what vintage & price you are about.
We owned a 1985 Ford Bronco 351V8 for a few years,....a GREAT vehicle,...a bit heavy on fuel,....10MPG!!
But really, there are heaps,....best you can do, is get on & google to see what you can find.
Most are diesel, but if you want SPEED, have a look at the Supercharged Ford Lightning!!
Other thing to be careful about is that if it is converted to RHD, be very particular about the conversion, who did it, how did they do it? etc etc, steering box, suspension alignment etc, & also how well the dash has been reconstructed so that all the controls, A/C etc work as they should.
The late model diesels are VERY good, I think one of the Fords has 1100NM!!

I've had a 5.9 Cummins Dodge.

This was it. Loved them, hated it.
Box ticked.
Would I have another? Yes. It's all about rolling coal.
Would I hate it? For sure.

I'm really not interested in speed at all, I want lazy torque. Embarassed

If I had the time or the workshop space my ideal would be a defender 130 with a Cummins 6bt but sadly I don't have the time to make it happen and if I was to pay someone else to do it I may as well start with a nice American truck which is purpose built. And I'd never be as happy with it compared to having done it myself.

All definitely a pipe dream at the moment but just asking if anyone has any experience of them. Life is about experience and life is better shared!

As for the Raptor yes what a beautiful truck - just a shame its a petrol.

There is a beautiful one available now for not much more than an XS 130 was new (oh god, was new thats depressing) on fleabay here

I've had a couple Dodge Cummins 2500s. A blast to drive really as you feel like you're piloting a battleship. Consumption is actually very good, I was able to do 22mpg (US figures) normally and 15-18 with a fully laden trailer. Easier to park in the US than in the UK though I presume...

Generally cannot stand amercian trucks, especially that horror that Custom Steve put up. But a local has one of these Raptors, black and white colour scheme, fully blinged and I must say I quite like it. I think because of it's squared, terminator-esque profile.

In general answer to shaggy dog, having driven a number in the US, Canada, Aussie and NZ, IMO they're a mixed bag. Huge amount of kit for the money, but very, very plasticy and cheap inside. Certainly not Audi/BMW even though the checklist on paper is the same. We accept that on a 60 year old farm vehicle, but on a 'new' car? Also, amazing straight line performance of the newer, torquier versions (some of the older ones would have a 6L engine with less BHP than a 2L Impreza) but massive, difficult to park, awful handling albeit getting better, and all the other clichés about yank automobiles. Wide, open spaces with lots of available road is their domain, not city centre. Which immediately means all the footballers based in/around cities seem to buy them. Shaggy, given your Kentish location, you can do laps of the M25 given they're about as wide and then brave an attack on central London every now and then.....perhaps squish a Kahn Defender whilst you're at it.... Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

Haha Yes some are absolutely gopping.

Especially the ones which have 12 inch lifts and then 17" low profile rims Shocked

But some sensibly modded ones can look fantastic!

Definitely a pipe dream as it would eat all of my money and time. Still, if I go on holiday somewhere big like America i could try and rent one Thumbs Up

In the mean time keep saving up for my cummins 130 Razz Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197
