They made the bonnet and wings flat for a reason. And not just for resting mugs of tea on!
As above keep the weight low down. And watch the maximum roof load - it will be detailed in your manual and generally includes the rack itself. |

I find this type of thing very useful, not much more than the wheel step, but (probably) higher and certainly more versatile. You can stand on it, sit on it, use it as a table or workbench, and it is very useful for reaching the inaccessible areas under the bonnet.
This link is just to an example and I am not endorisng this particular product nor this seller. Shop around for prices and sizes: Ebay link Accessing the roofrack on my DC is easy. Either I step first on the swingaway (Sonic3D) wheel carrier arm, then the top of the spare wheel, and I'm there, or I use the top of the rear tyre as the first step, the flange of the IW canopy where it sits on the body capping as the second step, and again I am there. It's so easy with a DC! |

was thinking of getting some pvc type tarpaulin (like the curtains sides of truck)...... a bit pricey
![]() any other suggestions - was going to get something like 4.5M x 5(or6)M so luggage can be wrapped like a portion of chips? what do you reckon / recommend? |

hi Caterham,
it's not really in the direction you're thinking about but i have one of these http://www.handiworld.com/handiduffel-black.html and some other similar dry bags with external gear loops from olmo here in the UK. Both seem to work really well from the POV of being easy to pack up and chuck on, secure on the move, and keeping stuff dry. depending on what number of bags i have on top i lash them down with stratchets or a net. 5mins tops to be good to go when packing. cheers Joe |

joe,
thanks very much for the suggestion. very nice no doubt but not quite what I was after (in part cos I'm looking to keep the costs down) and I part I'm looking to chuck everything from sleeping bags, to chairs to tent on top and as such I think a single tarp thrown on top followed by all the luggage and then wrapped well will keep it all dry and be a little more flexible in accommodating a variety of sizes of stuff. granted the bags are probably a little easier to pack for 95% of stuff. ![]() |
