Question - Ref: Air Intake Protection
Around here after heavy rain there are some roads that flood due to poor drainage. Not infrequently on coming cars don't see or don't care about the water an speed through creating a substantial side wave which can be at the height of the engine air intake.

I know I can fit a Snorkel, and may have to, but most of the ones I have seen raise the vehicle height by some inches/cms which could prove a problem in some car parks.

Does anyone know of a protective plate that would stand proud of the air intake by a couple of inches thus protecting the air intake from direct entry of water, a bit like the air intake protector on external wall gas boilers to stop the wind blowing directly into the air /exhaust pipe?

Do you think this would keep out the worst of the water?

Can anyone suggest a snorkel that doesn't increase the vehicle height?

Any advice much appreciated.

With the Safari you can also rotate the head in severe storms to prevent moisture ingress whilst driving! Thumbs Up
Look in my gallery and there are direct comparison photos between Fekete's Mantec and my Safari snorkels with the vehicles side by side! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Too True Lorryman100.

Think I might try my hand at making something from Ally plate + tube as a spacer.

Paddocks make this:- [/url] http://tinyurl.com/35s2qt8
which could help - but not for the Puma

Two thoughts:

1 I think you airintake can handle some water. I don't know the Puma intake in detail but with the Td5 the hose under the bonnet goes down first and then up to the airfilter. On the lowest point is a water outlet devise.
The design in total can handle a few liters off water before the water will go through the airfilter.

2. The military airintake looks to me that is for the air for the heater and not for the engine or iare the internals different too? Roel

Snow cover (see my previous post photos) is different from the Military (engine) Air Intake:

My air filter cover fell off about two or three weeks ago, and I've just carried on as though it's not been there at all and had no bother, even on rough muddy tracks and when jetwashing it off.

Obviously I'm not going to leave it like that for when the snow arrives, going to get a snorkel for it. Just trying to work out what the difference is between the new Safari Snorkel and the old one....

Not sure if I like the look of the base... Looks... odd.... Confused Or am I just being fussy??

No, I agree Warren, but I can't put my finger on it. It looks as though it slopes forward and isn't firmly attached.
