I am buying some Wolf steel wheels, 6.5J X 16'' from Britpart and they only come in black!
What is the best way to 'paint' them Fuji white to match a white roof... Powder-coating? Painting? 2 pack epoxy paint? B and Q spray paint! Other! How do each of these options stand up to regular off road use and also tyre changes? Many thanks, Pete  YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

Just my humble opinion.
When I bought the Mach 5 wheels, I had them powder coated. First trip in spring to Russia where snow & mud nicely removed most of the paint. Since then I have just painted them with regular white enamel paint applied with a brush. However this is for my off road Defender that isn't that shiny or straight anymore. If you off road the car, you will hit rocks and damage the paint, this way you can easily patch the paint. They look nice if you keep them clean. Brgds, Juha '96 300Tdi 90 '07 Puma 90 |

but I cannot find any white ones here in OZ! Shipping from UK costs circa £ 300!!! More than the wheels. YOLO... You Only Live Once... |

ahhh i see, depends how confident you feel at painting them yourself, or just be worth getting someone else to paint/powder coat them.

Just foget what I told about keeping them clean. I'm lazy and haven't washed the car after all rain here. But serously, painting with brush will blend in nicely to Defenders general appearence. Unless you're about to dash off to deepest Russia or expect temperatures in Oz to plummet and get a bucket load of snow to boot I can assure you that powdercoating is a resilient and easy finish to get (here in England powdercoaters are 10 a penny). I had a set coated 6 years ago and the finish was still very very good after that time with only one harsh Winter with snow though. I just recently bought another set of wheels and had them stripped, dipped and coated too. Click image to enlarge A process I would recommend.......unless heading to Russia..... 
Also hand painting wheels on a 2014 Defender will look  (rhymed with grit!) unless you don't really care of course!  If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Repainted our wolf wheels white last year;
Pros- Easy to touch up & cheap Cons- prepping wolf rims is very time consuming, finish seems to chip relatively easily despite having spent a lot of time and effort on prep. Chris |

I also remember (currently not got the time to search) about a certain brand of Wolf wheels rusting at the recessed seam almost straight away and the solution was to seal the recess with sealant. Perhaps stripping, dipping and recoating asking the powdercoaters to pay particular attention to the seam will prevent this from happening. Remove wheels, clean, rub down, mask tyres, prime, rub down, spray colour coat in paint system of your choice.

The reason why I preferred the brush painting is that in this part of world,
the forest is full of various size of rocks. You can't avoid to hit them and then you damage the paint. If wheels are for street use, the powdercoating is probably nicer. What K9F mentioned here about Wolf rims rusting from the hub and rim joint can be a problem. You could choose a paint color where you can find same or close color sealant, like Sika 221. Little off topic, apologize. Any idea where I could buy a set (5) of original Mach 5 wheels? In Billing 2008 was someone displaying a copy wheel where outer lip was turned other way around than in the original, but have not seen those on sale. Click image to enlarge For a while he sold up and someone else tried making them but made a hash of it. Matt Lee bought back the manufacturing rights and started producing them himself again. Circa 2008-2009 the design was changed to the ones depicted in my post above with the outer rim turned inwards to the beaded edge. Just prior to Matt Lee winding up the manufacturing of the steel rims due to too many people copying his design he made what was to be a final edition which had a flared centre and slightly flared spokes. It is this design that is copied most and as with the Challenger wheels due to width and offset look bl00dy awful IMHO also backed up by a fellow forum member buying a set and binning them within 24 hours. I would strip whatever paint the wheels come in off and start again. In my experience, especially from britpart, they will be painted with the thinnest coat of the cheapest paint possible.
