I have got fed up with losing part of my mud flaps when towing the caravan which is caused by the vortex created by the caravan pushing the flaps up on to the rear tyre. Also doesn't half make a bang which causes swmbo to stir from her slumbers and start giving me jip.
Looked at using some SS plate to strengthen the flaps but didn't like the cumbersome look so thought about how people used to raise their flaps wiih chain/rope when we used to go trailing. Then I saw these advertised on the bay, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331342278291?_tr...EBIDX%3AIT So bought them a put them on after postie had delivered them at lunchtime. Less cumbersome painted the SS screws black and can hardly notice them. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Took about 4 minutes total. Can either use a bunge or bit of rope. Jonesie off to burn some chicken in a corner of the garden and hopefully read the paper in peace. Thought about Myn as I have got stainless brackets and bolts holding on the flaps but wanted to keep as much rubbish off the back of the caravan a possible, especially as we are vanning in the UK and it's bound to be raining when I am towing it!
Also gave a nano second of thought to one of those front caravan covers but could not raise the courage to look at them for longer than the nano second Good luck. Jonesie Series I 86" Petrol orig side valve (daily hack) VW Tiguan ( bit bland but very comfy ) Porsche 997.2 790 Bonnie |

Hello jonesie
I went the same route as you... I'd read about this problem, but never experienced it, I tow a trailer and a caravan, then on the M4 about a month ago I passed a 110 towing a big van and the rear mud flaps were being pulled forward towards the rear tyres,... So a preventative measure was called for... Click image to enlarge SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

Hello jonesie
Overall: The eye bolts (fitted to the Mud Flaps) are from the Ultra Bar (Roof Bar System) / stainless steel The carabiner clips (also stainless steel) and 'cables' (light weight climbing cord) are from ellis brigham (camping suppliers) The center caribiner is a light weight (non-climbing type) from a local yacht chandlers / anodised aluminium. Just a theory on this 'problem' I have a hunch that a very 'flat' / square fronted caravan / trailer or similar sets up a 'disturbing' air pattern', a tumbling air flow directly between the rear of the Defender and what is being towed, as speed and pressure build the net result is the pushing forward of the rear flaps, until they get caught...a kind of back draft. The front of our Eriba van is 'aerodynamic' in profile, sort of bullet shaped in plan and whilst we have not had it long or covered many miles, as I said no issue so far, so my 'off the top of my head theory' is the more freely the air passes under, over, or around the towed trailer / caravan the better, (obvious I guess) Hope this measure prevents any issue here Good Luck SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |
