Usually each half of the prop has an alignment mark on it which is marked on once the phase has been set and the prop is balanced. The only real way to re balance the prop is to mark a corresponding mark on the other half and move that shaft one spline and retry to see if it balanced. If not then move one spline each time until it balances. Very easy to do on a testing rig but needs to be fitted and tested, and if still not balanced removed from the defender for each spline test which for me would be a right pain.

cheers guys - 5th HM - thats what i tried first and its not right!
also tried lining up the green mark with the flange mark (like the other 110 prop i have here is assembled) that didnt work either. looks like i will be working through rotations of alignment, something i was keen to avoid. especially as it need to be doing 65ish to find the vibration (or thats where it vibrated last time!) Are you sure it's the prop causing the vibration? have you removed it and driven with the diff lock in?
I would just line it up like in the pic above and take it to somewhere and have them balance it, I cant see it costing very much to balance and stick a couple of weights on.. then you know your prop is perfect I would get both done if the price isn't much.. I just Goggled Prop shaft Balancing in Devon & Dorset and it brings up a few so you shouldn't have a problem, will be worth it for all the hassle of trying to manually align it and test in each configuration... Hope you sort it soon, Vibrations are good for some things but not a Defender at 65mph Browny... My 1986 90 is currently on a full rebuild, with new chassis, Paint etc.. Very much a hybrid, TD5 Chassis, tub & bulkhead with a 200TDI and LT77 GB Painted in Stornoway Grey 2 years off the road, but getting close to completion now |

ok, i have a new prop here, it has a blue mark under the rubber cover which lines up with the rasied 'dimple' on the other male flange.
Click image to enlarge With the new prop flat on the bench at the non slider end: Click image to enlarge the other end, complete with mark looks like this: Click image to enlarge both ends of prop taken from vertical looking down. meanwhile my other prop, the one with the issue i believe of being out of phase, looks like this Click image to enlarge at the male end when the non slider end is placed square on the bench, you can see the marks are out and have been rotated one 'hole' clockwise. when it was aligned it created the wobble. What i would like to know is are all 110 props supplied with the raised section lined up with the mark under the rubber? If a propshaft is fitted in an application where the two flanges (diff and gearbox) are not coplanar, the yokes of the shaft are intentionally un-aligned to prevent vibration. Classic LRs are coplanar so the yokes will align. The Puma-engined ones are no, since the engine and transmission are raised at the front. As a result, Tdci propshafts will have the yokes misaligned intentionally, and will differ from TD5 and earlier even if the same length.
I'm afraid it is too wet for me to crawl under the truck to look for alignment marks at the moment. |

If it's any help; I've had mine off today to replace UJs and if the axis of the fixed end is at 0 degrees then the sliding end was around 20 degrees from vertical. I couldn't see how the sliding joint comes apart but the splines are fairly large so would say around one spline out of phase. I started with nothing and still have most of it left! |
