United Kingdom 2010 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 XS DCPU Bonatti Grey
Buying Advice
Looking at trading in my car and getting a Defender, ive seen a Utility hard top on a 08 plate and done 27k up for 14750+ the VAT (thought this is only 15% as the sell has a promotion)

Ive not driven it yet though i have had a good look around

Bad points:
its dirty & smelly inside but nothing i couldn't sort with a days work
No stereo, just a blank plate. Is the wiring already there just needing the addition of speakers and a head unit?
Needs new seats & would like a cubby box.
Manual windows, could i easily add electric ones?
Its a white van! Laughing

Good:
No signs of rust
Looks sound & Square Rolling with laughter
5 New tyres though they look like Michelins version of the Grabbers on our XS
+its got a nice Warn 9.5ti on the front

Ideally id like a double cab or utility wagon XS but funds wont allow.

Whats the consensus?

I always try to think of re-sale value and 3 years down the road you may struggle to sell it with little demand for a 110 van with no spec'.... Its not cheap either.
You will need a wiring loom, aerial, and speakers to the front and rear. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

Suppose a plus point on something like that would be that its a blank canvas for whatever you want to do with it. Although it does seem a bit expensive for what it is...

What is making you want to buy this defender the most, is it;

a) The winch already on it?

b) The blank canvas look?

You mention that you would ideally want a DC or a USW of which both have 2 rows of seats and at least 4 doors!

So my question is it the winch your looking at the most if you really want one with 5 seats???? Russell

I have picked up exactly the same courtesy car in 90 trim and not ONE extra... really is a compromise and so basic. But something nice about basic until you try and spec it up a bit... Noisy, crap wheels, no TC, no heated seats, no heated screen, no ABS, no carpets, no central locking, no radio or speakers, no electric windows, no central locking, no nice paint.. FORGET IT and buy what you want.. No point sinking the ship for a bucket of tar??? 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

I would pass, and buy a winch and put it on a rig that you don't have to work on if you don't want to. One might well find that doing all that one wants to do to get the vehicle up to standards will be more expensive and more of a hassle in the long run.
Do you have children? Are you planning on them ?If so, won't they want windows to look out from? Believe me when I say that they will want to go in the Defender over any other car you have... some thing about a cool factor the little ones pick up on.

Why does it smell? and what of? that smell might linger in the seats and any other fabric that it has on the inside...maybe there is crud somewhere that you might not ever find and the smell generates from there...

Saying that, I had a D4 from them a couple of weeks ago and expected a GS, but no- it was a HSE with ALL the extras like rear locking diff.

It's only 4k off the new list price (pre-VAT) of a 110 Hard-Top without a deal from the dealer/stealer....

I think if it was me I'd justify finding a bit more cash and going for a new one.

PS. If you want to go down that route then let me know!

Bought one of these new a few months back. I had to pay VAT, managed to negotiate a very good deal. Personally, I'd buy new as that prices isn't that far off new prices. Additionally, it's always nice having a vehicle to make your own mark on and knowing that no one has thrashed or neglected it. Just my take... It does have a Warn winch tho... If it ain't broke don't fix it!

If it was a SHB Hire vehicle they paid less than that for it new due to the huge block orders they place at LR and it will have been on building sites and pipelines up to it nuts in rocks and mud all day.. i used to be a mechanic with 4X4 Hire Ltd and we used to get them back with human waste and rotten food all over the insides... i'd pass on an ex hire car as it will have had a good shoeing all its short life. 2008 RS4 gone, 123d M Sport, and a Puma 90 XS..

very true, in fact Land Rover Switzerland have only started to import Defender in the last few years, before they just imported Range Rovers, and JonnyTurbo will agree, when land rover invented them, they forgot to talk to the underground garage engineers in Switzerland.. especially the Parking garages in Geneva they are mostly 1 metre 95 cm Big Cry
