Puma dash shelf
Hi folks!

You know the plastic-coated shelf that runs at knee height on both sides the dash on the puma? Is it structural? There seems to be a bar running through it. Reason I'm asking is because if the shelf could be cut away or removed on the passenger side it would create a lot more passenger legroom. We have a truck cab Puma and the wife has long legs.. We are planning a long haul trip from the Top End to Tassie and back so any additional comforts for either of us would be great..

Has anybody removed or modified that shelf? Would it effect structural integrity of the bulkhead and or vehicle to do so?

Cheers

Alan

I don't think it is structural, but it is an integral part of the large plastic moulded dash, so removing it and finishing the cuts neatly might be difficult. There is a bar running behind the dash, which is bolted to the bulkhead, and which supports the dash, but if I recall correctlt it is higher up than the shelf - I seem to remember that the grab handle is bolted to it.

There are photos on this forum in various other threads showing Pumas with the dash removed, so you can see what is behind.

This photo shows the bar (note that this is a left hand drive vehicle):

Well, it only fits one way round, so it's hard to get wrong! Thumbs Up

Seriously, I would love to take mine off so I could trim it up with leather etc...

but I don't have the belief that I would ever get it and all the wires back in the right place, I would also probably manage to mount it backwards! Laughing YOLO... You Only Live Once...

Plugs tend to tell you where they fit as they are all the right length to tech the plugs they go to, most plugs are in the centre on the outer edges they're against the bulkhead. Land rover stuck tot he age old, keep it simple.

The only thing you may come by with cutting that dash area is it will expose the air pipe that runs in that gap, redirecting the pipe would give almost as much knee room as the old 300tdi dash did. I would say cut the dash level with the bottom of the shelf that'll finish nicely there and would allow the desired space still

Surely being in Sydney you would mount it upside down? Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier
