Why are LandRovers so expensive in NZ
My wife and I are considering emigrating down to NZ in the middle of next year. I want to buy a Defender 110 and have been looking at getting one up here and then shipping it largely because I wanted to get some modifications done and it would be cheaper to do so up here, but I found out today that because I won't have owned it for 12 mths, i will have to pay the duty on arrival which is another 15%

The issue is that the price of a new Defender in NZ is 68k NZD, which is about 14k NZD (7k GBP) more than the best quote I have had up here.

Any idea why Defenders are so expensive in NZ?

Maybe a little, from what I hear on the rumour mill and bit of pub/booze talk with a former salesman they have like other dealers of European cars a deliberate policy of importing only one setup/build,,i.e. with all the xtra"s etc so we get it with all the trimmings, abs ,TC aircon etc etc and what the do is they add this into the price e.g A/c on my old td5 was NZ$3300 ,cost was 700 pounds=$2100.00 so they add this margin into the car at the higher price and then the car comes with all the extras built in so they can rort you even more. I know because I ordered a TD5 basic, no county pack etc etc and they wanted that price for the a/c, I showed them the UK retail and they looked embarrassed as they should and lowered the price, the funny thing was they built the car for the basic price and when it arrived it had all the extra t/c etc etc !!!!
They do hold their price here compared to japanese 4WD as we have lots of japanese imports of 2nd hand cars which devalues all japanese stuff.
after 9 years a friend got $35000 for a car that cost $56000, the toyota would have been 15 to 20 k only
you would need to own the car personally for some time to avoid the GST tax etc

they usually do not discount defenders as they can sell them ok as NZ only gets about 300 range rover, discos, defenders a year as a allocation

Still cheaper than in RSA! A 110 station wagon starts at ZAR363000 and that's not including 14% VAT. Shocked

ahaha - yes, if it was up to me - thats probably what we would be doing but - the wife is a kiwi. Anyway, if I was moving to Aus, I think it would have to be a Hilux instead - I heard Defenders don't run so well in the heat... Whistle

Humm,

In Chile a Defender cost more less the same than in NZ.
A new 110 SW have a price list of CLP 25 millions tax included (19%), equivalent to 68 kNZD = 32 kGBP = 36 kEUR = 357 kZAR. Probably you can get a 5%-10% discount.

Cheers Eduardo

yup, it IS cheaper being VAT free , but they don't budge at all from list price and then as its a direct export I have to pay arrival GST in NZ (VAT equivalent). Its cheaper if I buy one with a good price on it over here and then ship it having paid the VAT over here

Might be worth looking at what is involved with buying one over in Aust and shipping to NZ as well. Just a thought as there are quite a few available over here, and you don't get the rust problems like you do in England, and may be cheaper here too? Main prob with doing that tho is getting to look at any before you buy......but a flight to Sydney might tickle your fancy Very Happy

heard of a few people who wanted to do this 3 years ago to get the GST back you need to buy in a ozzie company name (hard unless you know someone) and then GST 15% in NZ on truck and freight plus the NZ+ $0.75 cents australian so might be a no go
