Can you store LPG underground? Don't they have to be above ground?
Personally I wouldn't want to sink a tank holding a highly inflammable gas that's heavier than air anywhere within the boundary of my property New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info |

Yeah I know it sounds a bit risky but I'm assured it's safe??
I've seen the calor gas tanks but it's £1500 to install one below ground, wasn't sure if there were any other options? I've also been told that oil is better but I'm not sure! |

In the process of moving away from Calor to JGas due to no customer service and costs too high. New contract is 10p / litre cheaper and only £300 for underground tank. Have to dig own hole but Calor wanted the same and still £1500.
Tank has to be installed (and checked) set distance from building, boundary, road etc but as we need a new pipeline to house due to age and change in acceptable materials we had to dig a hole and track anyway. Have always found Calor to be useless at offering advice or help. Don't take complaints seriously and failed to accept our tank leaked despite numerous call. Best folks they have are the delivery drivers. It was a driver that accepted the leak issue and reported it. I lost confidence in Calor and J Gas confirmed that they have taken many customers in my area. Go underground so long as you don't intend setting a car park on top or siting a smoking shelter over it. |

we got calor in the big tank , maybe slightly more expensive than mains gas , but cleaner than oil and had no problems with calor at all , normally come just before winter and fill it so your alright over winter you used have to go and read the level then ring them , now its all done electronically and they know how much is in it when we had the tank fitted , we done the ground work , trench , concrete base etc to keep costs down we have had it 15-20yrs and no problems at all |

I have an above ground tank that is well hidden by a hedge screen. I was on oil but found it dirty and the boiler was always breaking down so I switched to Calor the cost of the tank was free including installation. In the eighteen months I have been using Calor I have found them to be excellent and in usage it is much more efficient and cheaper than oil.
The only thing that worried me recently in fact last Wednesday was the terrific lightening storm we had, I kept thinking if one of those bolts hits the tank .. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at.. http://www.youtube.com/user/conwy1 |

99.9% of all gas bottles are stored outside , so guess lightening cant be a issue

Thanks for info guys,
I've requested a quote from Calor, Northern Energy and Avanti. If I can do the ground work hopefully it will keep the costs down |

We did an underground tank about ten years ago for a client we were working for at the time.
It all went fine, works fine and is better than when he was on bottles. The thing not to underestimate is the amount of spoil it generates! It was fitted by a subbie for calor, we back filled and then calor did there pipe to first isolator. I think the tank supply and placing was free subject to signing a contract for a set period at that time. |

In recent years a significant proportion of new domestic LPG installations are with underground tanks.
The storage tank has the appropriate coating applied to prevent corrosion and there are specific requirements for the material used to backfill the hole in particular against the tank to prevent damage to the protective coating. The tank is also protected by cathodic protection which in effect diverts any potential corrosion to a sacrificial anode. I'm not sure what other gas companies do but Calor monitors the cathodic protection on a regular basis and carries out any routine maintenance to the tank which is all covered by the tank rental fee. Another important point is that when in the ground the tank is anchored to appropriate sized concrete slabs to prevent movement in the event of a high water table. If this is not done correctly the tank will lift out of the ground. ------------------------------------------------ 2002 TD5 90 HT County |
