Question for any builders/roofers out there
A question for anyone out there in the building / roofing trade.

We've just taken possession of a new house and I'm looking to create some light storage areas above the joists in the garage. (nothing significant in terms of weight and looking at the joists, certainly nothing I'd want to walk over)

Piccy below shows what I believe are 'ties' spanning the joists at an angle. These ties are nailed down on top of the joists and foul large potential areas of storage. I assume I could remove these ties from above the joists and then screw them to the bottom of the joists in exactly the same layout without in any way compromising the integrity of the roof structure or is there a very good reason why they span across the top of the joists??? I also assume that by screwing down some chipboard loft boards across the top, I am providing and additional tie anyway?? Any thoughts most welcome Thumbs Up

For comedy purposes, other than I couldn't rotate it, the second piccy shows how the bloke that owned the place before me got on with his attempt at boarding out some storage. 2ft centres on the joists and 4ft board panels... eeek !

Its bracing just to stop the joist twisting/bowimg. Yes you can remove and place underneath, if you like, but equally boarding above will do the same job.

Yeah - I removed my bracing bars, and replaced them with 22mm tonged-& grooved flooring, well-screwed down to each joist. No problems yet (and I have a lot of weight up there) Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)
