2009 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Bonatti Grey
2009 Defender Erratic Speedo no engine power
Hello could anyone point me in the right the direction please, today we have bought a 2009 Defender 90 County Hard Top Puma. And as soon as I started to drive it home, once out of second gear the speedo starts to go up and down erratic (from the current speed to zero and then back up)

As it's doing it, the power in the engine goes but it does keep running and your able to drive. I was able to keep to a steady speed going home and at lower speeds it doesn't do it (below 20mph)

There is no warranty from the seller as it was a company vehicle, and I agreed to buy it sold as seen.

The mileage is 118k, and it has full service history.

My local dealer can't get me in for a week, so I thought I'd ask to see if it's happened to you. Looking through the Forum I can't see anything

Thanks in advance

Hello thanks for that I did read this before posting , my vehicle hasn't been worked on or had a clutch so I kind of dismissed it.

I've just read another thread and they mention cleaning all the terminals on the accel pedal, which I'll try in the morning.

Will update

Check the connector on the speedo transducer first - on the rear end of the transfer box, behind the handbrake backplate.
Whilst you're checking the transducer plug, check the earth connections on the transfer box and any other ones you can see underneath.
Throttle pedal conector shouldn't cause this fault.

You say it was a company vehicle, but what was it used for?

With 118k on it it'll have had a clutch change believe me, probably more than one! The link to the thread was primarily what to look for and what to do, not dismiss it on the grounds of yours not having had a recent clutch change or instrument binnacle removal.

^^^^ Agree. Thumbs Up

There is an earth strap as suggested on the transfer box, but is mainly for the rear loom. But still, unbolt clean degrease and re-fit.
Mine was like this after a clutch change as I had rear lighting issues, it was fairly tight but was dirty which was the issue.
There is another on a front outrigger under one of the front wheel arches.
IIRC it's the OS but can't quite remember.
( under front arch nearer the back on the outrigger)

There are also earth connections on the top of the bulkhead in the engine bay that are worth checking for tightness.
