From reading this thread from my point of view I think both K9F and Munch are correct.
I think the cable K9 has identified is most likely suspect and as munch suggests I too doubt it's anything to do with the ECU.
It's simply flagging up that there is a problem.
It could be the cable it's self or maybe more likely the connectors.
Checking all functions with a voltmeter / multimeter certainly would help.

I can see the alternator being turned on xx seconds after startup as munch mentions as I notice every time with my HU that it boots up about 4 seconds after the motor is running.

Good luck. Thumbs Up

Just to add to my last post as a possible thing.
Before any work is done at all, disconnect the battery completely for half an hour then reconnect it and see what happens.
It might need the whole ECU / system to re-boot and recognise that there is no longer a problem.

If nothing else it might be worth trying as sometimes to power off completely for a while then back on will sort it's self out.

Thank you all. I have talked to the guys at the garage, and we have agreed to replace the new alternator with a new original one, after they have tried all the alternatives you have suggested here. We'll see how that works out...

I will! And I hope it works out. Next step is to replace the ECU, they say. And if it's not that, the ECU is custom made for the car, and would be money out the window Confused

Btw the starter was replaced this Easter, so it has been a few things this winter. i put it on the charm account , can't other than love the Defender, though strange things happen with it. Perfect car in Norway.

Changing the ECU solved the charging problem. They never found out what the exact problem was. Land Rover...

The alternator is ECU activated on a Puma.
