Hi,
I replaced the RHS and LHS cappings on my 90 yesterday. The front and rear of each capping has a screw for attaching the hardtop. A couple need replaced. The one in the picture is OK. Does anyone have a part number or know where I can get replacements? I've checked various parts catalogues from over the years but can't see this. Hi Martin,
A few tips that might help. If you don't have a workshop or garage to do it in wait until you have a day of good weather. I started at 9am and finished by 3pm. I would have been quicker except that I had a lot of extra drilling to do (see below) Buy some proper closed rivets. I bought these. I would buy 100 to be on the safe side: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Land-rover-defen...4d339832f6 Buy a lazy tong rivet tool if you don't have one already. My hands would have been cramped with a normal hand tool: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lazy-Rivet-Riveter...B00A38YDDY Have a decent metal drill bit and drill. I used a 5mm bit to drill out the existing rivets and holes for the new ones. I used genuine land rover cappings, but only about 6 of the rivet holes matched my existing (from factory) cappings. I had to spend a while drilling new holes and filling the old holes. This took most of the time. I put some waxoyl mix paint under the new cappings to try and keep future corrosion at bay. You don't always have to remove the roof, or use the windscreen hinges. I got away with detaching the hard top from the cappings, taking off the back door and removing the front and back door seals. i then used a jack in the bed of the tub and a wooden post with a T piece on the roof then raised the roof to give me enough clearance to do the job. Other than that just do a bit of googling. There's some great how to's already out there. I read through them and got lots of tips. Hope this helps. |
