Well - mine does this exact thing when the EGR valve is bunged up. Had it replaced a while back - totally went away. Started doing it again more recently, so I took it back to LR - they said the 2nd EGR valve was again sticking and replaced it for a 3rd valve and the surging has gone again. The solution is - short term, new EGR valve, long term - wait for the German bloke on here to come through with the blanking kit and software patch. |

It may be worth it to take out the EGR and clean it regularly, say every 10Kkm or so? |

Agree totally if you've got the time and inclination....was meaning to do it but LR Assist had to be called and a new EGR Valve fitted under warranty before I found time to do it! If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

Didn't I read somewhere on this forum that LR stealers put some kind of EGR cleaner in your diesel tank when they service the vehicle? If so, it would make sense to stick a bottle of that stuff regularly, every 5000km or so? I have been adding 2-stroke oil to my Puma since day 1, theoretically this should mean my EGR is cleaner than just running with diesel. I will ask the stealer to open and clean the EGR at the first service, only got 12Kkm on the clock, so 8Kkm more to go until then. |

I did clean the MAP sensor as well last weekend. I also ran the EGR cleaning procedure by starting/stopping the engine several times (maybe 5 or 6 times, leaving it running for 30 secs or so in between) and it seems to have improved... Or maybe it's just me |

You might like to Google DIPETANE FUEL TREATMENT. I got a bottle of the stuff. If it's claims for reduction in waste gases ,including a big reduction in the NOx emissions are true it should go a long way to keeping the EGR valve clean. I have e-mailed them specifically regarding the EGR valve in the Land Rover Defender TDCI 2.4 engine. When I get the reply I will let you know. If it works and if it only needs occasional use it would be o.k Could work out expensive if needed at every fill. Another product AUTOMAINTAIN fuel system clean and restore is used once every 10,000 miles. It has similar claims. I did contact AUTOMAINTAIN who said that the Fuel System Clean and Restore will keep the EGR valve clean. I can forward you the e-mail if you want it. My main dealer uses Automaintain Profession Oil System Clean and Restore at servicing.That is how I came across Automaintain. Anyway the Automain Fuel System Clean and Restore would appear to be better value as it is used once every 10,000 miles and it claims to clean the whole exhaust system. I use this: Millers at a tad over £9 per bottle somewhat cost effective and that can do a total of 10 tank fills. I find it 'does for me!' Not had any problems since and must admit last time I changed my EGR Valve blank from 12mm down to 10mm blank was not as dirty as previous prior to use!
