Hi Mariol66 hope you enjoy the trip. Darrel re the URL you posted for inspiration that is a great website & I have bookmarked it for my future ref. However the main picture of the Defender 90 has me intrigued as to what are those attachments on the roof?

I guess this trip can only be done in a Defender!

Hi Avion,

Those look like fishing rod holders to me.

The route absolutely doesn't need a Defender. It's tarmac all the way. Some of it is single track with passing places, of which there are many hundreds of miles in Scotland. Driving on these is an acquired art; striking a balance between driving safely and courteously, and maintaining a reasonable average speed. None of it is dual carriageway but there are some great fast stretches with constant-radius curves, courtesy of European Union support.

Having said the above, a Defender is a great way to do the route. Somehow it fits right in with the iconic scenery. And of course, if you're camping (recommended), then a Defender makes a great vehicle to live out of.

Hi Tarrel,

Thanks for the reply, and are those rod holders suctioned to the roof or drilled through? I lived in Scotland back in the late 70's at Kinloss & did a fair bit of travelling in an MGB, and out of Dalcross in a Cessna 152 Aerobat. But we do plan on going back for an extended tour of Scotland & some other EU spots, ideally I would like to do it in a Dormobile Defender, maybe even a 90" with the new top they offer. May have to do a mix of luxury & camping as the wife will be along for the trip.

I'm not familiar with that particular type. They usually come in two parts; one which mounts on the bonnet (hood?) and one on the roof. Those types are usually suction mounted.

No problem doing the mix of camping and luxury. There are plenty of nice "highland lodge" type hotels along the way. 2012 Defender Utility Wagon

Just back from a wee trip . Cairngorms , fort William , Loch Lomond . Jacobite steam train ( Harry Potter ) took the new Sankey wide track which was outstanding . Frontier stove for the cooking and a bit of canoeing .

No shortage of LRs doing the tour and met this one from Northern Ireland . It's the very first defender being registered in 1984 so nearly 32 yrs old

Damn I wish I saw this earlier... guess you've been and gone and come back again.

Assynt and the far north are fantastic places to visit and a great drive in the Defender.

Torridon is awesome just to see Liathach tower over Loch Clair if you're headed out towards Skye.

And the Bealach na Ba is a great drive with a nice finish up in the Applecross Inn where the food is just so good. That road is crazy bonkers; I set almost the brakes on my S2000 on fire on that stretch
