Wonders will never cease
Finally got round to checking the oil levels of the transfer box and gearbox of my Defender 90 and was pleasantly surprised to see they were good and clear from the slight drip over the lip of the fillers.

I did the front and rear axles a month ago and was not impressed with the front axle being black and very old.

Both now new oil and golden clear.

Razz

Grease from outer hubs has more likely got in to axle oil turning it black and old looking

it will be the same as before soon

A change of inner seals maybe then?

cobra_mark - you can put your vehicle details in your profile so we know what you have/how old it is?

Was surprised to see the difference in the colour of the oil between my diffs. The front was black whilst the rear was still golden. I was wondering whether i could put this down to the front diff doing more work than the rear or whether I should be looking for an issue. Oil level was certainly not higher in the front.

it will be the cv grease from the front hubs

a spoon full of cv grease will turn oil black and not enough to rise oil level that you would notice

Rather hoping it wasn't as not expecting that on an axle that has done under 10k miles!

Is there another way to confirm diagnosis easily?

Having a big garage session to sort out brakes, shocks etc. so will look at the seals.

As to my profile it appears to be filled in correctly so not sure why the details are not visible ?

A bit confused.
