Anyone know how long they last? I'm a bit suspicious of them as it's basically a differential designed with clutch packs instead of gears which seems all wrong to me. A clutch that's constantly slipping. But what do I know, I'm only an electronics engineer not a mechanical one
The context is I'm trying to persuade my dad that he'd be better off with an old Ford Ranger or Hilux as a tow vehicle plus a car, rather than a vaguely 4x4 thing like a Sante Fe, Freelander or the like. We got talking about 4x4 systems and I explained how selectable 4x4 and "AWD" worked, he commented that AWD sounded a bit crap, I agreed and then realised that loads of vehicles use it, so it can't be that crap can it? But then if you think about it, a constantly slipping clutch, even a wet clutch, can't be a good thing? Are there any medium sized 4x4s that don't use Haldex type couplings? CRV, Disco Sport, Evoque, Qashqai, Yeti, Outlander, Forester and Sorento all do as far as I can tell. |

We use X5's on fleet with Haldex, they get hammered and do between 150-180k in their lifespan. The one thing that doesn't die is the Haldex. Ok, so they don't do a lot of towing, but they get driven..... significantly New project and it's green: www.projectoverland.info

As mentioned before don't think of the Haldex Coupling like you would a dry plate clutch. If you want to know how the Haldex works then look at this training manual extract from VAG.

Volvo use Haldex in the XC range,(60,70,90) , never heard of a problem, bar the ECU that is screwed to the rear axle, and is prone for water ingress California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1

Yes, I know they're multi plate wet clutches Thanks guys, you've put my mind at rest a bit Still not sure I'd want one in a proper working vehicle though! End of luddite |

Its the metallic part that matters , metallic plate clutches wear much less then the kevlar or ferodo type plates
