United Kingdom 2012 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 X-Tech LE Nara Bronze
Epic Gearbox Fail. MY 2012 110. "Your Thoughts" pl
Calling All members. Evil or Very Mad
Timeline. 2012 Defender 110 2.2 TDci. Warranty runs out Sept 2015. (25k Miles)
1. Machine noise, only slight, from inside cab around gearbox area, just thought normal......
2. Tuesday evening a worrying "clank" when letting clutch out, no matter how slow or smooth....
3. Got in touch with dealer, was told to bring it in....
4. "Just" managed to get off M6 and on slip road, total failure of gearbox, massive metal crunching noises, no drive.
Land Rover Assist, BRILLIANT.
Enterprise Car Hire. BRILLIANT.
Dealership. Great and took keys said they would take a look
So.
Can you guys restore my confidence in my pride and joy as concerned that I've had such a large failure after only 2yrs.
Guy at dealership said its "a shaft between gearbox and transfer box" ??? Any ideas......
Has anyone else had this happen?.
Should I be concerned it has damaged anything else?.
Would love to hear your thoughts fellas.
THANK YOU.
Andy. Thumbs Up

Thanks Ray.
Looks like something to add to my servicing list in future.
Might last a little longer then. Let's hope the service guys are aware and give it a look at a grease tin while they have it out.
Cheers.

However Andy,
there are a lot of us on here who have done a lot of miles with minimal issues ... this is the good/bad thing about forums that you see everyones faults as we only post for help when something has failed ... we dont often post when everything is tickety-boo.... but if you do have an issue then I know that you will get some serious support from all on here

Good point Elgar.
I really like the forum and have got a lot out of reading up on stuff.
Guess we are a bit quick to jump in with OMG stories. Lol
Won't put me off the truck though.
Never been happier to drive my 110 than any other 4x4 I've owned.
Cheers.

It appears to be the luck of the draw with this shaft and coupler. I changed mine at 80k as a precaution when the transfer box "O" rings failed. There was a fair amount of the red dust but the wear to the shaft and coupler were negligible. Mine is a 2007 model, it seems the later models are more susceptible. Confused I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

Well. Got the truck back yesterday, and I must take the time to update thread. Stafford Dealership did a great job and also updated outstanding mods whilst they had it in.
Drives like a dream, well, for a 110, if you know what I mean.
Plenty of grease on the spline so fingers crossed that will last now.
THANK YOU for replies and links to threads it was really helpful to understand what had gone wrong and what was needed to put it right.

CHEERS Andy T. Bow down
