Where the vin is shown on a lot of suppliers part lists, they omit the first part of the vin (the SALLDHMS7 part).
The catalogue page shown seems badly written as for example where the 2.4TDCi is shown the chassis no. range actually predates TDCi production, (vin 7A000000 onwards) Quick breakdown of vin number (example SALLDHMS77A123456) SAL - Manufacturer ID LDHMS - Vehicle attributes (LD=Defender) R/LHD body type etc. 7 - Check digit 7 - Model Year (2007) A - Assembly plant 123456 - Sequential number. The TDCi brakes are the same as used on the later TD5 Defenders, hence the seemingly strange vin shown on the Brembo catalogue. Is there any reason for wanting Brembo parts particularly? TRW are an OEM who's brake parts I've had no problems with. Try contacting Steve at Advanced Factors (forum sponsor), he also gives 2 year warranty on most parts. |

Advanced Factors do brakes for Defenders, and can/do supply Brembo.
http://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/05-brake-...-231-c.asp The VIN bit at the end of the line on that Brembo page applies to the pads only, it is in the "info" column for pads. That's to do with the change of caliper type in ~1993. A 110 will have the vented front discs. Vented fronts are 09.5488.10 Rear 110/130 Td5 or Puma are 08.A841.10 90s typically have solid discs and smaller rear discs so are different part numbers. 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

Fifth Horseman:
Thanks for the explanation of how the Vin No. breaks down. I should be better informed after owning Land Rovers on & off for a good many years . However, I don't usually hit a complete 'dead end' when searching for parts. As to my reasoning: Land Rover Genuine Parts, whilst being of undoubted high quality, are more than double the price of Brembo! OEM seems to be a fairly meaningless phrase, which has been well covered elsewhere on this forum, and I would be unsure of what I was getting for my money. I will not buy Britpart, as I had one of their indicator stalk/light switches fail inside 6 months and do not trust the quality of their parts. Brembo parts (I've also considered Ferodo) seem to strike a good balance between price and quality. So, that's my (possibly flawed) logic!! Martin: Thank you for your reply. At the risk of seeming a berk (I've only just learnt that it's a shortening of the rhyming slang "Berkeley Hunt" - You learn something new every day!! ), but being willing to take a hit for the benefit of the wider Puma owning membership, are these the other parts that I will need? Front Pads: P 44 015. Front Fitting Kit: A 02 257 Rear Pads: P 44 006 Rear Fitting Kit: A02 256 I may well try Advanced Factors, in the hope that they have the parts in stock, as I'll soon be running short of time to get the work done. Thank you both again for all of your help '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci |

Sorry for not being clearer when I used the term OEM. TRW are one of the manufacturers whose brake components that Landrover fit. AP-Lockheed and Brembo are others.
I agree with your comments about a certain blue labeled brand - have had callipers from them where the mounting holes didn't line up with those on the axle |

Thanks for the info.
I also took a look in the Brakes section of the Puma Workshop Manual, and that lists the brake pad compound as being 'Ferodo 3440 Non Asbestos', so they're obviously on the OEM list as well. '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci |

I think that digit actually refers to the transmission and steering - 7 being RHD 6 speed manual transmission. From SALLDHMS you get: SAL = World Identifier = Land Rover (UK) LD = Vehicle Type = Defender H = Class = 110 inch M = Body Style = 5 door station wagon S = Engine = 2.4L Euro spec (EU4) |

Indeed, there is no check digit on a non-North American/Chinese VIN. http://disco3.co.uk/wiki/Vehicle_Identification_Number 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top 2015 D90 XS SW |

A perfectly timed 'How To' article in the latest edition of LRO magazine covers the replacement of front pads & rear discs + pads on an ABS braked 110 SW!!
In this article, they also seem to recommend fitting new anti-squeal shims, rear hub nuts + rear caliper securing bolts. None of these items are part of the 'disc + pad kit' bought from advanced factors. Should I be buying them as essential items before starting work? Also, my sphincters starting to twitch re: removal of the ABS rings, as they look fragile + expensive. Am i right to be worried? '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci |
