Thought this might help someone - I looked into so many different split charge systems. National Luna, IBS etc. In the end settled on an intelligent solenoid from http://www.adverc.co.uk/product/801 and a standard leisure battery (110AH) which was £69 from a local automotive electrical place. Made a bracket to hold down both batteries, reversed the battery box cover bracket to take account of the slight increase in height and hey presto. total spend £160.
This was after 3 seperate so called "expedition" specialist companies said I would need a fabricated steel box mounted under the wheel arch to carry the second battery as "you cant fit a 2nd battery in a defender battery box". Nonsense. I'll take some pics if anyones interested, but I'm no electrician and it was a doddle, the adverc instructions and wiring diagram are easy to follow. Ran a waeco fridge, 300W inverter (charging camera batteries and a laptop). the green "full charge" light never goes off - and recently this was even having the vehicle south facing in full sunlight for 3 days in morocco, not driven at all, where the temp in the vehicle got to well over 70 degrees C. The fridge remained at 2 degrees C all the time. Didnt bother with a battery monitor. I figured that the fridge needed to be on all the time anyway, so there was little point in having a monitor, plus the fridge turns itself off if the voltage gets too low. I did almost buy one of these http://www.aoservices.co.uk/data/bsm.htm which are the grand sum of £20 but didnt bother in the end. So if nothing else, I hope this saves someone a few quid. There is the added bonus with the adverc that you can install a button which, if you press and hold whilst starting, will use the second battery as the one to get you going in case the main battery is flat. Again, a doddle to install. by the way I should add that I have no connection to adverc at all, save for being a happy customer. |

handy info
I didn't even bother with a split charge. I isolate the extra battery's with a 300 amp isolator switch if there is anything drawing from the system when the engine is not running. You can easily fit a second battery next to the original, a yellow top fits in perfect. Mind you if you get a 130 there is loads of empty space under the 2nd row seats https://www.defender2.net/gallery/displayi...amp;pos=39 130's have feeling's as well you know |
