Hi Guys,
Today I had to face my greatest fear, watching someone else drive my 110. My Girlfriend of 4 years climbed into the driving seat and for the next 2 hours we trundled around quiet streets under L Plate conditions. For the first time in 4 years I was sat in the passenger seat in my own defender being driven. In fairness to her, she did very well and this is the first step of many towards her having her own one. We didn't do anything to difficult, just getting used to the gearbox and steering was enough. But she loved it! But for me it was slightly terrifying watching someone else at the controls of your baby. Does anyone else struggle with "letting go" of the wheel and letting your wife/girlfriend/husband/boyfriend/friends/parents drive your truck? My wife VERY occasionally drives ours, sometimes the boys at work will drive it on site, but I'd estimate I drive it 99%+ of the time. Mostly if someone else is driving I don't really see it but recently when it went into the workshop the mechanic picked it up. Seeing it drive off down the road was a very strange experience. I have sat as a passenger three times since I bought my motor 6 years ago. Twice when I had stuck an axe in my leg on a camping holiday a few years ago, my ex-wife drove a couple of times as I had been advised not to drive as it could open up the wound on my shin. After two trips I couldn't sit in the left hand seat any longer, not because she was a bad driver but because I couldn't let go. I was doing enough leg pressings on the floor pushing those imaginary pedals! The third time was letting my 13 year old have a taste on a Pay and Play site, he did find out about how to cope with a failed hill start. The one thing that did make him think was by getting the pedals mixed up when doing the controlled descent, the throttle is not really the pedal to put to the floor when in reverse downhill After he composed himself we went up the hill again and he cleared it like a pro
That's the only people apart from the MoT tester that have been behind the wheel of mine. |

Problem is I drive my 110 every day so I know every single squeak, rattle, creak, quirk and noise she makes.
Trying to explain to your girlfriend calmly and quietly how to go from 3rd to 2nd smoothly is very difficult as I know how to do it instinctively without even thinking, but to someone who is used to a 1.2 diesel Fabia it is very different! But even so, its just odd to be on the wrong side of the wheel! And even weirder to see someone else driving it.... I know what you mean it is a stress sitting in the passenger seat when my missus drives. Even in the house when she drives off is bad enough. Her car parks in the carport outside the office so if I am in the office I see her go out. She seems unable to put the car in reverse without grinding the gears. I have gone outside numerous times when she does it and showed her how not to do it ie put the clutch all the way in and wait maybe 3 seconds before putting the car in reverse, but sure enough by the next day she does it again!! My new Defender is coming soon and I am scared . Maybe I need to buy her a nice car so she leaves mine alone.

When I bought mine I sold both our daily cars as my Wife decided we didn't need 2 cars.
Got it home and she was going to drive it the 7 miles to her mum's to show it off. We got approximately 3 miles during which we had gone up a verge pulling out of a junction and i'd heard the thud of elbow on drivers door numerous times despite reminding her to tuck her elbow in. Turned off the main road onto a side road and she jammed on the brakes, stopped and jumped out announcing she was never going to drive it again. We were a one car household for less than 24 hours as I had to go an buy her a Fiesta the next morning! To be honest it suits me fine as she is 5ft6 and I'm 6ft4 so I never have to adjust the seat or mirrors after she has driven it! |

Regularly the mechanics at my dealership, ...
occasionally Mrs. ericvv, ... more rarely our son, or fellow def2 member kitoper, or Olaf from Entreq (I was recently in the SVX with Olaf driving, well he drives it more enthusiastically than me, I did not know it could accelerate that enthusiastically. ) ... very rarely the Swiss equivalent of your "MOTters" (sofar only once, 3 years ago, second time will be this September) All combined, those other drivers will make up something around 0.5% of the total mileage on the SVX now I guess. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation. http://youtu.be/yVRlSsJwD0o https://youtu.be/vmPr3oTHndg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GtzTT9Pdl0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABqKPz28e6A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLZ49Jce_n0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvAsz_ilQYU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8tMHiX9lSw https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dxwjPuHIV7I https://vimeo.com/201482507 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSixqL0iyHw Last edited by ericvv on 7th Jun 2015 5:03pm. SWMBO drives mine happily, she is a good driver and I have no problems letting her use it. I just hope she doesn't decide she wants it, last time I had a D3 now she 'has' it of course I still get to pay for the bits and fix it

NEVER!!! Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

I let people drive it all the time. It's a piece of machinery not my wife. It's for work it has to earn its keep.
