Not to worried about the consequences as I live far away, but as a 'Caterham + other half owner' I think I know what causes the problem.

No-one cares to comment on this? Also, obviously there's been some serious appreciation over recent years, so reasonably long term owners with original S!s would be pretty happy?! I went to a LandRover Club "Heritage Day" recently & had a good opportunity to look at S1s, had a good ride in one with wifey, did some ploughing, and the same S! was hooked up to a saw bench & other implements via the rear PTO,...the particular vehicle had been a working vehicle all of its life, never been restored,...and still working!! It was a top day.Pickles. |

Hi Pickles,
Series 1s are passing hands for good money at the moment, but sadly it is the real Land Rover enthusiasts that are being pushed out. 10/15 years ago you could buy an 80" out of the local paper for £500 bung a V8 in it and have a great off roader. I know, because I've done it! But all of a sudden these little Land Rovers became very fashionable for some reason? We had the TV programme "for the love of cars" saw Tom Pickford and a certain Mr Anstie restore one. This was then sold at Auction for about £32000! (Can't remember exact figure) Kahn brought the 80" and then used it as a promotional tool, taking it to LR shows up and down the country. Then it was for sale again, but now it seems to have slipped off my radar! Early 80s ie 1948 pre-pros and 49/50 models are the most desirable you would pay anything from 10 grand to 30! General classics car collectors seem to be buying them, being a sound investment? Are they really worth that much? I know restoring a S1 is serious money now, especially if you have to find the parts, most are dated so if your restoring and want a proper job, you need the right parts/and the right dates stamped on them. Engines are fetching eye watering money, 2ltrs and especially the 1600s, God knows what you would pay for a 1500? There are still the barn finds coming up, but getting less and less every day 
It seems everyone wants one at the moment and that's why the price is high. A good 80" £10/£15 grand Good 86" £7/£13 grand Good 88 £6/£10 grand These are rough prices for a good running vehicle, which you could jump in and drive without too much bother! I know quite a few people that would love one, but now have simply been priced out of the market Sad really You have some lovely ones over there, and in NZ many that went there still survived due to the weather, 80" 80" 86" 88" 90" Wanted, Forward Control Anything considered. |

ian, Thank You, some good info there.
I did see "The Love Of Cars" program featuring the S1, & it looked to me to be a good job, but I always worry that in these sorts of restos, they're done in a hurry, with a purpose in mind, ao that some of the important "detailed" stuff is missed. So, was the "TV Car" a good resto according to those that really know? Thanks again, ian. |

In this case, yes it was. If I remember correctly they used one of the original upholsterers for the seats. This could have been a bit of spin to make an interesting TV programme but it seemed genuine to me.
I don't think it would have fetched the record breaking amount it did if they had not done something special. If I had that money to spend on a series 1 I would like some bragging rights down the pub too, and being able to say some old guy had been dragged out of retirement to recover the seats might just do it! 2002 110 td5 |

Let down in other aspects though, up close certainly wasnt the best. Pics do it a bit more justice than it deserved.

Nice? Yes but for the money there were silly little thing that let it down. They used a cutting disc to remove the floor panel bolts...............cutting discs and soft alloy do not go well together! Stood out like a sore thumb 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"
