Best mod I've done too, much nicer to drive, better on long journeys, quieter (!) and just makes it generally a better drive all round

Thumbs Up

I'm about to do mine - the box is a bit of an unknown quantity, but seems good.
My rationale is that if I like the gearing, and the box isn't great, then I'll be happy to buy a reconditioned one.

I was going to keep my low mileage box but tbh it was heavy and I got fed up of moving it around so I sold it for £150

The box I bought was an unknown quantity too, they guy seemed fair, he said he'd had it sitting in his garage for a while ready to do but never got round to it, then sold his Defender, it was from a Disco with 'around' 70 - 80k miles on. I took a gamble and it paid off, it's been on a while now with no problems. I paid £100 for it.

I'd just keep your original one until you're satisfied the new one works ok and then sell it. Either that or when you're happy with the new gearing, send it to Ashcroft for a recon/swap.
You won't be disappointed though - I'd be amazed if you were anyway.

Out of interest, what is the benefit? And is this for all models/engines or a specific variant? Ta Monsieur Le Grenadier

Thanks Lambley.

Grenadier,

The benefit is that with the taller gears you get lower revs at the same speed as the 1.4 box.

So for example you won't have to change up into 2nd so quickly when you pull out from a junction etc - which would be a big plus for me. Also at cruising speeds your engine will be quieter and probably more fuel efficient.

For context I think the 1.4 was so you could set off on a hill with a massive trailer full of livestock on the back - also in earlier vehicles the Defender engines didn't have the torque to pull the higher gears comfortably - since the Td5 this hasn't been the case.

I don't think you'll need to swap yours grenadier as I believe all puma engine defenders already have the 1.2 transfer box. Ray
