Hello all,
For those of you not out and about Defendering on your Bank Holiday, a quick question about hinges. I have a white 110 Puma SW and I am looking to add some black 'accents'. As such, I am keen to source the following: Black door hinge set Black bonnet hinge (security type) Black windscreen brackets Will likely take the chance to upgrade to SS or even billet Aluminium, budget dependent. Anyone made the upgrade? Any recommendations? Ta Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |

Stainless ones come at a premium too but you get what you pay for. Alternatively buy a set of OEM ones and get them treated and coated in whatever colour you wish it'll cost a damn sight less and nobody will know they're not stainless except yourself.
I recently gave a set to Blackwolf. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

I was thinking that, especially given how similar they can look. But those Optimill versions are superb. If you're going to create a specialist line, do something a little extra, as they have. I agree that buying Billet over stock, when they look the same to the untrained, distant or 'passing-at-90kmh' eye does seem a little like a waste of cash. Monsieur Le Grenadier

Alternatively, just to give another thing to think about.
I replaced all my Side hinges with Galvanised ones as my original ones were all warn and dropped- being galvanised they should not get the same rusting issues and you can paint them whatever colour you want. From memory a whole set for a 110 CSW was £120ish? Including new bolts, nuts and gaskets. The Windscreen hinges are Aluminum - I do remember seeing a pair of Steel Galvanised ones a while ago. I haven't found them since I'm afraid. Mine had to be replaced as they were very very warn. So warn in fact that Mr Foley of Foley special vehicles commented "I've never in all my years seen a pair of windscreen hinges that bad" No idea what the Environment agency did to achive this but ho hum now changed for a pair of fixed ones.
Got mine here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-DEFEN...3cbfc4042c Properly painted with a good etch primer and then sealed with silicone they are as good as when I put them on and should last another 23 years at least! As for the door hinges, they rust out on pre 05 Td5 defenders because the pins were a simple taper pin in a slot, as it wears the pin elongates the cast iron hole and allows water in which then rusts and makes it worse. Post 05 hinges were a better design and had a plastic bush for the pin to sit in which helped keep the moisture out and stop them rusting. I got a galvanised set and they were very good quality and should last forever. I got them from here http://foundry4x4.co.uk/index.php?route=common/home Make sure you ring them and ask for the Galvanised TD5 110 CSW Kit as they do an early kit which is not galvanised and the quality is appalling! I have no connection with ether company other than I have used them and they were very good Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

Hi there, I went through two sets of door hinges on my 08 110 XS in 6 years. On my keeper I installed Croytec door hinges and windscreen block in black billet (hinges come with a built in grease nipple, which is nice). Bonnet Security Hinges from Mud UK and powder coated black. Chose the Optimal rear door hinges. Altogether not cheap, but it is a keeper.

Thanks all for your thoughts. I do love the Opitmal, but a tad 'cher' for me at the mo. Mine are actually in very good nick, so as someone pointed out I think I will prep, prime and paint them myself. Properly done they should have another few years in them. Will also upgrade the bolts to full SS. Only the door hinges and windscreen brackets for now, as I shall definitely get the Nakatanenga bonnet hinges. But those Optimal versions are on the cards if/when I have the money and do the re-spray. Will upload photos when done.
Thank you all as ever for thoughts and tips Monsieur Le Grenadier I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list..... 2011 Puma 110DC - Corris Grey |
