Depends on the condition of the chassis.
If its not in bad condition I would just paint it, if your stripping everything then might be worth shot blasting and galving the existing chassis. If its shot then replace it with galv  Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I had a n/a B reg 90, the chassis needed a few bits of welding doing for the MOT but not too much, probably around £200 tops. That was only because it'd been stood for a couple of years
I suppose it depends on several things - 1. how long you intend to keep it? - not much point in spending £££'s if you're only going to keep it a year or so, you won't get back the cost of a new chassis 2. what's the rest of the vehicle and engine like? You don't want an immaculate chassis and everything bolted to it isn't going to last long or is problematic 3. what are you using it for? If it's just a hack to run around in then don't worry too much, just patch it up and enjoy it |

I'm just putting a galv chassis on my B reg 90. The chassis I'm taking off is in really good condition, the very front needs a tiny bit of welding that's very easy to do (where the bumper hides the ends) and it has had a recent rear crossmember on too, which hasn't been a perfect job.
It will certainly come up nice for an hour of welding and a few hours with a wire brush and a can of paint. It's a shame really, though I wanted something do over the winter months......I just didn't anticipate it rolling into summer too!! |

Another thing to consider is that, in places, they seem to rot from the inside-out...
On that basis, if the vehicle is a planned keeper, I would budget for a new galv chassis. Sorry if that's not what you want to hear.  |

Thanks for all your suggestions guy but what I was trying to say was if I buy a brand new chassis I'm thinking of getting one in bare steel not Galv and painting it to keep it more original

Galvanise and paint.
Even standard defenders are stolen at an alarming rate... Stick a bright, shiny, unpainted galvanised chassis on one and the scum will be attracted to it like magpies to jewellery....  |
