Axle diff vent hoses?
Hi Guys,

I noticed when I collected my Puma, that both the from and rear axle housings have what looks like a vent nipple fitted on the top of the casing, with a long run of 5-6mm black hose fitted to it. The hose runs back and up into the engine bay.

Is this a breather hose? I am confused as I have looked under quite a few other Defenders and not many have this fitted?

Was this an 'option' of some kind? I did not order it!

sounds like standard fitment axle breathers

been fitted like that for many years ( think from when 90110/defender came out 1990 ish )

Don't think I've had a single Land Rover over the last 30 years plus that didn't have them fitted - although previous versions have bee better engineered than these.

In the early days (leaf spring era) the breather vented straight to atmosphere via brass doobrey on the tube. For the last two or three decades breathers vent via a tube to a high point.

You might want to inspect the front axle breather hose, I found mine rubbed thru on the n/s/f front axle, suspension arm.
As luck would have it. The DAF truck dealer I work at have 5-6 mm air suspension pipes. these are a direct replacement.
A couple of push / quick fit connectors, and the front axle is water proof again. (well as best it can be). Excuse the spelling I`am better with spanners and wires.

I have looked under quite a few new Puma's and not all of them have this fitted... Question YOLO... You Only Live Once...

Mine had the breather tubes from the front diff and transfer case running up into the engine bay, but the rear axle breather was just strapped up under the chassis. I took the plunge and routed all three to a dedicated "Nugget" manifold high up under the bonnet.
