Just seen this bit of equipment and it looks fantastic. I don't mind the price tag as it looks as though its built to last and its all environmentally friendly and what not.
The feature of being able to charge USB devices on it will be really handy when out camping and I really like it. Just really wanting to see if anyone already has one and what they think to it? Heres a link to them http://trekoverland.com/biolite-campstove-bl1.html |

So let's say it takes three minutes to boil enough water for two people, how much will it charge your device? Might be me, but I also don't see myself burning sticks for 8 hours to get my phone charged...

Yeah I think I will stick with my Kelly Kettle and rely on the fag lighter charger in the Land Rover - which I always take camping too..... Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Normally use an MSR Dragonfly, but I do admit when I do have the time for it, playing with fire is more fun.

I agree. To add more wood you have to take whatever you are heating off the top then wait for temperature to build up again, you also need a good supply of dry wood which can't always be guaranteed. If you like the idea of cooking over burning wood, just make a small fire with a suitable griddle above it. I bought a Coleman dual fuel stove the other day which will run on petrol It kicks out some serious heat, will work in all temperatures unlike butane and fuel is readily available. |

20 minutes charging time gives 60 minutes of call time which lasts a lot longer if its just in standby mode. Boiling time is a little bit longer than you said, its actually 4 and a half minutes however this is whilst you are charging your phone on the same device. www.trekoverland.com | 01751 430 693 | info@trekoverland.com Expedition Equipment for you and your 4x4! www.mobilestoragesystems.net | 01751 430 318 | info@mobilestoragesystems.net For all your secure storage needs! |

+1 for the Dragonfly Very controllable burner flame - from gentle simmering to fast boiling - and has interchangeable jets to burn Coleman fuel, diesel, paraffin + unleaded petrol (with varying boiling times). However, it's loud enough to wake the dead when cranked right up!! MSR stoves are also bulletproof and have good spares availability + manufacturer back-up. My mid-90's Whisperlite International is still going strong. The only downside being that the flame is nowhere near as controllable - more on/off - even if you play around with the fuel bottle pressures. '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci |

If you don't want to wake up the others while cooking your breakfast with the Dragonfly, you might want to have a look at this: https://store.quietstove.com/select-stove/...onfly.html

That look's quite neat, especially if it works as well as they claim, but I'm happy to save 60+ bucks & maintain my powers of resurrection! '57 Defender 110 XS Station Wagon 2.4tdci

I can't see that charging a modern smartphone, maybe that's why all the info talks about a 4 year old phone as it's example. I kind of like the idea of using a fire to generate charging power too but at the end of the day this is just a tin can with an electric fan and battery bolted to the side and the USB thing is a marketing gimmick that actually ends up devaluing the product IMV. It's not that useful as a USB charger and the emphasis on USB charging detracts from any actual benefits it might have for it's primary purpose - as a stove.
It's a fan assisted portable wood burning stove when all's said and done. At 400mA (2 Watts) continuous charge it'll struggle to come close to charging most modern phones, hand generators give much better results than that and can be used in a tent and when it's raining. I'm not certain, from the description, if you can actually charge the internal battery for the fan and a USB device at the same time... anyway my Land Rover has a far more efficient and simpler charging system built in. For vehicle based camping it seems pointless as there are better, cheaper options, for hiking it's too heavy and bulky, same for cycle touring. I don't see what benefits it offers over a camp fire or a simple gas stove. If you're going to carry wood around with you then a Kelly Kettle and a 12v charger is a much better option and a LOT cheaper. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |
