All 3 of my working dogs are chipped and wear is tags.

If my dog is microchipped does it need to wear a collar and tag?

The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of it’s owner either engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. A telephone number is optional (but strongly advisable). An owner can be fined up to £5,000 if the dog is not wearing identification.

There are some exceptions to the rule:

Dogs used on official duties by the armed forces, HM Revenue & Customs or the police
Dogs used for sporting purposes and packs of hounds
Dogs used for the capture or destruction of vermin
Dogs used for driving or tending cattle or sheep
Guide Dogs for the Blind
Dogs used for emergency rescue work
A microchip offers back up if the dog managed to slip it’s collar whilst for instance out on a walk or looses it’s collar during straying. If the dog was stolen the thief could easily remove an ID tag but would not be able to change owners details on the microchip national database.

It is also worth noting that a straying dog with such information on its collar is normally returned by the finder directly to the owner saving the expense of claiming the dog back from local authority kennels.

although the above law only applies to a 'Public place' .. There is no requirement for a collar if on private land Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant.

The problem with dogs is they can't tell the difference between private land and a public place and whilst they may start off somewhere private, it doesn't take long for them to be somewhere they shouldn't be!

And anyone who doesn't microchip their dog is a fool

What a horrible thing to witness. Glad both dogs are ok now.

I got a big fright the other day as well. Samson my Akita was home recovering from a little operation. All of a sudden I come into the room and he's in distress, crying and whining and shaking his head from side to side like you used to see "mad cows" do.
In a total panic I call the vet as I think they have screwed him up somehow during surgery. Thankfully it turned out to be what the vet called an "anaesthetic hangover"
Due to him weighing in at 65kg the vet had to use quite a dose of anaesthetic. Thankfully he seems right as rain now...

Just wished the vet had pre-warned me about the possibility as it was a scary thing to behold..

Yup. Here he is guarding over all he surveys....

I'm 6'2 and he can easily get his front paws on my shoulders when standing up.

Thanks guys. Fortunately I caught it in time, the op and immediate recovery went well so she came home last night, she is bright and wanting to fill her belly today so fingers crossed. I've had dogs working and otherwise all my life so have encountered the condition before. This bitch is only 4 1/2 and I hoped to have a litter out of her but that is not to be now, not to worry, I just glad the vet did a good job and she is hopefully on the mend. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.
