To echo all the above, mine never wears a collar unless we are out [and not working] ... Even then its loose enough so that if caught he can pull his head out of it ...
Been like this for the last 2 dogs, ever since we once found a skeletal dog [not mine] trapped in one of the field boundaries, whilst out working .. collar was caught on a sturdy branch Guns and Landrovers .... anything else is irrelevant. |

Agreed, I've seen dogs hung up by collars before so I never work mine wearing collars and always use a slip lead. Steve.

What a shock, I bet the image of you walking towards them with a knife gave em the extra energy to get free, joking aside and hearing everyone's view makes me re think about collars. My lab has plastic clip type collar now that supposedly can free off but also its loose that he can pull backwards out of it.
Just given my 11 year old Chocolate Lab Milo an extra big hug and an early dinner. Glad it worked out ok, and thanks for posting might just save another dog. |

By law your dog is meant to wear an id tag. You need a collar to do that.

Our cocker only wears a harness when out and about. Doesn't have an ID tag on the harness either. Didn't realise it was a requirement 110 D250 SE HT

One safety tip i have for any one with young kids
I cut the metal loops ( bits for clippng leads to ) off our dogs collars as my little un kept putting her fingers through the loop and if the dog took off after something ( they chase anything that moves ) they could rip her fingers off also use the working dog tags that fit flat to collar so they dont catch in anything |

G-Mack - yep was brought up with labs and choker chains and collars, but when started to do more with working dogs it was no collar ever and slip lead for reasons mentioned. I'd never experienced it, just been warned of the possibility. Hope your pups enjoy their extra hugs.
Miserableolgit - My no2 had the same. She didnt like wearing the 'Cone of Shame' afterwards. Apparently they calm down once they are speyed ?!! Well ok they do a bit. no.3 is a boy and he has just showed me that he can lick his crown jewels with ease. I won't be removing those unless its really necessary. Border terrier - thats the idea with micro chips |

Glad it all turned out OK, but my eyes go wide when i think of people using all types of knives on a struggling frightened dog.
Get a cheap seat belt cutter or something like this: |
