Like this you mean ?
Click image to enlarge Not mine but pretty much what you are suggesting. I like the use of a kind of dummy rear cross member although it could do with some shackle extensions to match the Defender's lift. The widetrack is indeed the same track as a Defender and I would think that a 90 back body would pretty much fit fairly easily. The only difficult bit might be panelling in the front although if you leave the bulkhead in place and make a small compartment at the front you will be able to fit as standard soft top or Ifor Williams top. Maybe fit some small batteries in the front compartment then. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ Last edited by davew on 8th May 2015 10:28am. Edited 2 times in total |

mmm not really, what I'm thinking is to keep the sankey "as is" but lift on and off the (modified) top part of a hardtop.
Ie: by day its a mild mannered standard Sankey, but by night its a mild mannered Sankey with the back & top of a defender (or series) bolted to it... Kind of like "the blackbird" used by Loughborough LRC, but only the top bit being landrover and the bottom bit being sankey (I dont seem able to attach the photo for some reason ) :http://www.loughboroughlrc.co.uk/userimages/DSC_8071.JPG |

Sorry, with you now.
Using the Sankey tub itself is more difficult because it's actually wider than a 90 back body at the top by a few inches because it has vertical sides instead of being "waisted" like the Defender. You'd have to either widen the top to fit or add some sort of filler panel. I hadn't realised this myself until I decided to try and stick a Defender soft top on mine, at which point it suddenly made sense. It MIGHT be the same width as a High Cap though... not sure. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

Cheers Dave
I had looked online for dimensions and seemed to suggest they were compatible, but I reckoon I'll wait til I have the Sankey on Sunday and measure it a and take stock of options. What did you do in the end ? |

Click image to enlarge There is the pic chap I think it may be difficult to do otherwise they would have done that rather than just stick a 110 rear on it. Having said that, there is nothing stopping you making a frame for the defender top to sit on and then drop into some box section in the tub which locks it down. But you may loose some space on the inside. Only issue I can see is that a roof and sides is deceptively heavy. On my own I just about managed to lift the roof and rear panels (admittedly with the windscreen on) of my 110 when I was doing my rebuild but with 2-3 of you around it should make it easier. Interesting project ether way Make sure you keep us all posted with lots of pics
Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197 Self confessed mileage hunter |

^^^ It's surprising just how peculiar that looks with no towing vehicle attached - almost as though someone has cropped the front out of the picture!
Bet it looks good behind the matching tug though! |

That's looks really professional Andy. Not sure I'd have the skills to replicate. What did you use for the top? |
Yeah - I'm quickly starting to doubt myself on this "little project". It could easily turn out like a load of arse. I'm going to hold fire until I collect the Sankey and have a good think about what's realistic for my ability, available time and budget. (Maybe just cover the top with cling-film is as about as good as I'll get!) Will keep you posted either way... |

You could use the roof of a Defender or Series, like mine here, but you'll have to adapt the width of the roof, the trailer tub width is less than the roof width. I am currently upgrading this one, it is a M416A1 trailer:

I like that Vincent and have read about a similar build.
In my minds eye I'm thinking I want more height to allow for inclusion of pull-out kitchen and a canopy etc in the future. Also, mine is a widetrack so I guess the tub will be wider than yours as it sits over the wheels not between them? Out of interest, can you recall how much did you need to remove from the roof? I just took the measurements, approx. 13 cm was cut out in the middle section (I bought it this way).
I now changed the roof hinges for stronger welded on ones, and uprated the gas struts so the roof is lifted easily even with roof rack and lugage on it. The roof was primered last week, and will be painted white soon. I ordered Epsom Green paint made to colour for the body, I think I will paint the chassis and wheel spats black.
