the lights, wheel bearings and leaking swivels as a priority
then chassis welding at least then it can be seen stopping and staying together Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

My thoughts for what they are worth.
have you any photos? 1. Colour of the vehicle has been changed - not necessarily an issue unless the DVLA or your insurers don't know! 2. Has got recon engine - yay? 3. Rear wash wipe not working - not an immediate problem, possibly a fuse. 4. Hazard switch not illuminating - new switch can be had for less than £15 5. LH side repeater not working - suspect bulb easy fix definately a priority though 6. LHF Out Rigger needs welding - very high priority 7. Rear cross member needs welding - depending how bad ether patch or chop it off and get a new one. 8. LHR Front bush on trailing arm got play - easy fix 9. Rear exhaust trail pipe corroded badly - so is mine, avoid britpart but cheep and simple to replace 10. T/box got slight oil leak - so does mine, just keep topping up 11. Engine got slight oil leak- from where? 12. Rear diff pinion oil seal leaking oil- if its a Salisbury rear diff may need to take advice from a specialist as what seal to use as there is a few - also worth changing input flange 13. LHF & RHF wheel bearings got play (May just need adjusting) - see 14 14. LH and RH swivel leaking and got slight pits on swivel ball ( may just be able to change the seals, until we start the job and have a good look at the swivel balls) not worth it, strip them and change the swivels for new ones and while your there may as well change the bearings 15. LHR hub cap leaking oil (just needs a replacement rubber cap) new rubber cap 16. Rear brake pads worn 70% - new pads 17. Fan switch faulty- shouldn't have a fan switch unless you mean demister - in which case new one 18. No fast speed on the wipers -may be ether switch or relay- recommend upgrading relay to one with an intermittent setting 19. Battery insecure- new clamp can be had for a couple of quid. 20. Rear door dragging (may need door adjustment or the hinge pins and balls may need replacing, not expensive) you've said it 21. Drive belt got cracks ( needs new belt) you've said it 22. Clutch fluid was low( may just need topping up or possible a leak, would have to keep a check on this) you've said it 23. Driver door u/s ( steel section missing from door, may be able to repair) should be able to repair quite easily - get a quote while your getting the chassis done 24. Misfire when cold - unnusual in a 300 Tdi, try a new fuel filter and some injector cleaner. Also check injector spill off pipes are not cracked or loose letting air in (and leaking!) Of all of those I would agree with JST as the priority. Only other thing I would add is look at getting the timing belt changed as that will give you peace of mind! As far as cost goes depends how skilled with a spanner you are as most of those jobs are fairly simple jobs but if your not they could add up to a lot of labor! As far as I can determine at least 12 of those on your list are potential MOT failures and should be addressed with equal priority. It really depends on your technical acumen how expensive it is going to be and how much time and inclination you have to do it as Shaggydog stated? Will you be doing the work yourself?
Spares are in abundance and cheap too. Do some Googling around the 'Usual Suspects' Paddocks, Rimmer Bros etc. Sounds like an excellent project. I am always sceptical of Dealers and Specialists and of course they would state the oil leaks are a priority....for them it will be biggest moneyspinners. It's an enthusiast or like-minded person you may need to cajole into assisting you. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!! Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!! |

thanks very much for advice on oil leak repair/specialist advice, yes - I suspected as much. I am planning on doing as much as my competence will permit, no MOT til November, so got a bit of time, main priority is to keep it running, while ensuring I tackle the key repairs asap before they become unstable/dangerous, some I'll do myself, some I'll have to fork out for, the more info I have the better I'll be able to make a judgement call on which comes first and whether I or the garage does it, this is tremendously helpful, so cheers!
