That was one option I did think about that idea, but then I thought well I have all the main bits already I need so why not use them?

There is still time to change my mind. 1999 Defender TD5 110

The axle I have purchased is complete except for the suspension. Leaf springs will get in the way / move the axle too far back. 1999 Defender TD5 110

That type did come up in conversation with the man in the trailer shop. He suggested that the beam type axle would be stronger and more suited to the role I am going to be using it for. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Hi.
I as a side hobby I spend a little bit of time here and then around rally stages and I have seen a few dollys in use. Atlas Rally Recovery run a unit which uses indespension units and 13inch wheels. They can be found on Facebook if you have such new-fangled technology.

Down here Ralph of Western Rally Recovery again uses a similar outfit although with a spec lift instead of suspended.

I am going to use the coil springs that are on the Harvey now. On the pink picture the spring turrets are the upright tubes. 1999 Defender TD5 110

I have seen one or two using indespension units but kinda like the solid beam type axles. No Facebook for me Sad

I have seen a few pics of Ralph's setup knocking around. There are many ideas/setups around the rally scene. Its case of which works best for me I guess? 1999 Defender TD5 110

No the coils are staying. Essentially its the same suspension set-up mirrored across to the wider axle and using new coil mounts on the axle. 1999 Defender TD5 110

Work has started. New axle collected 45mm solid beam with 5 stud hubs and 12" wheels.
5mm folded U channel section also collected along with the spring turrets.

Old axle removed from the Harvey to make life easier measuring up - the old axle can be refitted in about 30-45mins so the Harvey can stay mobile if needed.

The U channel needed a bit of trimming down to fit between the hub back plates.

In the picture the inside of the black tape (as shown on the wood) is the original width of the Harvey axle, so it works out about 13-14" extra per side with the new axle.

Next step is to cut out two 60mm holes for the spring turrets to sit in and then I can tack weld these in place and then to fit the U channel to the existing Harvey frame so then I can work out the other bits needed. 1999 Defender TD5 110

A bit more done today with a help from a mate.

Started to get the U channel into place to see how it fits and see how it looks with the spring uprights in place.

From the front

Next step is to bolt the U channel to the original section to get things in place and ready for the next bits. 1999 Defender TD5 110
