Hi Mick,
The annexe has a curved zipped opening, specifically designed so you can have the annexe attached and pegged down and then just open the bit around the door when you want to access the vehicle. It zips all the way up to the top and then bottom edge is about level with the rear cross member. You can see it opened fully and tied up in this pic - http://landytravels.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/image.jpg We originally had the tent mounted overhanging the back by about 20cm, so it was about half way over the the spare wheel. See this - http://landytravels.com/wp-content/uploads...25x300.jpg That did give more room in the annexe but it looked terrible and pushed the weight further back than we wanted. So when we put it back on this spring we put it so it lines up more or less with the back edge of the hard top. A bit less room in the annexe but not so its an inconvenience. The annexe is quite tight across the spare wheel, and yes, the spare wheel does encroach into the living space - having said that there is still plenty of room for a couple of chairs (ours are Oztent King Goana, so fairly big!), table, and bags / boxes, whatever you want to have in there with you. It is a great space for 2, but you could probably seat 4 easily (especially if you unload less kit from the Landy!). We tend to peg the annexe as close to the Landy as poss and then use the space underneath the spare wheel for bags and such like. When the 'back door access' is completely zipped up, the annexe is completely enclosed, including the ground sheet (which can be zipped on or off). We have the fridge in the back of the Landy, on the nearside, so if we want something out, its just a matter of unzipping and rezipping just the bit around the opening side of the door, as I only need to open enough to get half my body in!! If you need to rummage around more, or get out boxes and bags, you just open it fully and tie it up above the door. To make extra room when you are sitting in the annexe you can also stow the ladder above on the underside of the upper tent. More details and pics can be found on our blog here - http://landytravels.com Hope that helps! We love ours and hope you are pleased with yours..... We'll be starting a 4 month trip around Oz with ours in NSW, from March 2014 - so you never know we could meet up and compare notes! |

Hi,
I installed a ARB Simpson tent and ARB awning for my expeditions in South America. The tent is mounted on an 'platform' making it very quick and easy to unzip the cover when opening the tent. I carry two jerry cans of extra diesel plus a can with gas for my Coleman stove on the roof hence my main concern was to keep the tent and awning weigh low. ARB has served me well traveling from windy Patagonia to the extreme cold Altiplano in northern Chile. Adventurous greetings from Santiago, Chile. Click image to enlarge MY 2008 SW Defender 110 |

That's a proper tent. Just needs a stove in it for winter camping. Nice & easy to set up as well unlike some modern day tents with loads of poles. |

I did tents for 20 years, then went to the VW Camper for 5 years before last year giving in to the luxury of the caravan. Of course now I have the Defender, I'm looking at these roof tents which look sooo cool and thinking.... I want one of those.

One to add to the mix from the States, although I'm not certain they have a UK dealer:

There appears to be a lot of talk of poor quality on the cheaper tents however I have a arb simpson 3 and although I love it and it has survived wind and rain for the last few years I have had some quality issues some before I had even taken it out. The main issue I have experienced is the telescopic pole parts on the entrance not staying extended.
The tent design is great and strong but it was all manufacturing faults, so looking around I am now much less concerned about price and must have a look. Would I buy another arb yes but I wouldn't discount some of the other cheaper brands. I would keep away from the really cheap pvc jobs mind. |
