6th gear rattle
Hi Chaps

Driving with a fully loaded 110 at 100+ km/h up any incline where you add any power to maintain speed I get a rattle sound from directly below the gear shift.
Placing a hand on the gearstick and moving it in any direction makes no difference. Seems from that it may be poorly meshing gears or something loose in the box. Happened same time last year on Botswana trip when vehicle was loaded. Sound is exactly the same but has not worsened. Do I just leave it incase they change the box and I get a worse one?
Any opinions - video of sound below (3,9MB)

Hi Cape!

Believe Fekete had a similar/same problem some time ago! Drop him a 'pm' as a prompt and I'm sure he'll get back. Like you his vehicle is often either loaded or towing a heavy trailer. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

ja mine does the same, doesn't have to be fully loaded just needs a bit of labour (6th gear up hills just below the power band). it's done it for more than 2 years. there was some improvement when the gear selector plate got replaced, but it's back now. i'm just leaving mine - besides that noise my truck is going well without any complaints ("touch wood"). www.ralton.co.za

My 07 110 did the same. Drop into 5th and it was fine. I concluded it was the TDCI lump struggling to cope with the load and the overdrive design of 6th gear.
Intrestingly, since I changed from an 07my to 10my 110 I have not seen the issue. The engine feels a different beast in the new 110, more torque, less of a flat spot at 2100 rpm and revs so much smoother than the old one. Paul

Its lack of lubrication in the gearstick assembly.

Mine was the same, but fine now. Can pull in 6th from 50mph now with no noise Thumbs Up

Surely these are the same motors? - isn't it maybe just the software and how it manages the fuel, etc? (i hope you don't get "my" software version when you next go for a service, but rather that i get updated with your version).
Any thoughts on this theory? www.ralton.co.za

Is it easy to lubricate the gearstick assembly? www.ralton.co.za

Yes they are same. I may be imagining this next bit, but I think the gearstick is slightly shorter on the new 110.
Maybe they have tweaked or improved the gear stick to resolve this fault.
I have noticed many subtle tweaks on the new 110 but by far the biggest difference is the power and smoothness of the TDCi engine. The balance at high revs is vastly superior to my old 110 and there is so much torque i could race an AudiTT. Very Happy
PS may be going off thread on this one, I might start a new one about the differences between an my07 and my10.

Update
Dealer said he stripped the gear shift assebly and re-lubricated.
They also found some or other retaining screw missing and fitted a new one.
Also had a new difflock switch fitted in the T-Case
All sorted now.

Driving behind my wife however on the way home - I noticed a lot of diesel smoke and that was not even under much acceleration Crying or Very sad
Not sure if they did any updates while she was in the dealers but she was'nt smoking before

Weird, when I took mine in to N1 City and told them that the 1-2 change was sticky, they said it's a one-piece unit and cannot be lubricated!?

Mine is 2007 build so may be different. Mine was also not a selection issue, only a rattle

My MY07 makes the same droning noise in 6th going up steep hills. Just had my 60,000km service and asked them again to check it out but they found / did nothing.

Interesting I have change my commute and now do two hills on the N2 and N3 to work and the noise / vibration seems to have reduced (but is still there) now that I'm doing the hills daily. Very strange...

I have a new clutch on order which will hopefully solve the "pulsating" / rattle when in low range. Ex 2008 Puma 90
